Then, using each word, note a time where that less lovely characteristic has actually came in handy and helped a situation. For example, I am messy. Action: Be an active listener. Pick up your phone. Find someone who you know needs to talk, or someone you may come in contact with today, and really listen to what they have to say. Then, ask a follow up question about what they just told you. Pose: Standing or laying mountain pose. Then, put the heels of your hands over your eyes, so your palms are on your face and your fingers cover your ears.... Mental Focus: Find silence. For some of us this is more challenging than others. This doesn’t mean make everyone else in your house or neighborhood silent. It means remove background noise that you would usually use for at least 5 minutes. If you usually listen to music in the car, try riding with the sound off for a change. If you watch a TV show while cleaning the kitchen, try at least 5 minutes without it. So often we distract our brains with entertainment to smother our thoughts, or indulges to push them away or avoidances and pretending they don’t exist all together. For at least 5 minutes today, sit with your thoughts. No TV, phone, music, etc. Just the sound in your own head. Action: Do something for someone else. Don’t tell them you did it, unless asked. Pose: Tree. Stay for 4 or more breath on both sides.... Mental Focus: Make a list, either in your head or on paper of all the qualities of a tree. For example, leafy, green, growing, rooted, etc. Then, choose one that sticks out the most as an attribute you admire. Now add the words around it I am ___insert your tree word here__ like a tree. Think of this affirmation 4 or more times today. Extra challenge, find Wind Breath. In hale through your nose and then through slightly puckered lips allow the exhale to move out your mouth with a wind sound behind it. Then make a list of the people in your life who you don’t really enjoy. Pose: Choose your favorite yoga pose. Spend 3 breaths or more here. Choose a yoga pose that is just ok to you. Spend 3 or more breaths here. Think of your LEAST favorite yoga pose. You know where we are going with this, sp...end 3 or more breath rounds here. Extra challenge, use the Mental Focus challenge below while in the corresponding lists. The last, find your more comfortable yoga pose. Stay for 3 or more breaths. Mental Focus: Using the lists you made. Think first of the people you are grateful for. Mentally send them love and peace. Then, concur up the people in your mind who are just ‘ok,’ and send them love and peace. Last, think of the people on that last list, those who you don’t particularly enjoy in your life, and send them love and peace. Extra challenge. Now think of yourself. Of all the hard work you have done already over the last 3 days, the last year. Action: Write a list of all the things you are grateful for. Ideally on paper so you can stick it somewhere to see more often, or in your head if paper isn’t handy. Then, send two letters or cards to two friends or family. Maybe you include why you are grateful for them in the note. Pose: Chair pose. Until you can’t any longer. Repeat at least two times.... Mental Focus: Come up with a code word, like banana or puppy, to break through your mind loops. We all have those something’s that run through our minds that we don’t truly need to be mulling over. When this happens, use your code word to bring you back to the here and now.
