Meet our speakers for our Power of Protest Curated Cocktails series! Marina and Lev Furman spent ten years fighting the Soviet government for their right to immigrate to Israel. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Marina and her husband, Lev - one of the most prominent underground Hebrew teachers in the former Soviet Union - and their daughter Aliyah were finally able to take Aliyah to Israel in 1988. Marina is a refusenik, activist, distinguished speaker, and has served as the JNF...'s Eastern PA and Southern NJ Executive Director, National Donor Advancement, for over a decade. Cathryn Miller-Wilson is the Executive Director of HIAS Pennsylvania. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1993 and has spent her career doing social justice work: representing parents accused of abuse and neglect at Community Legal Services, Inc., representing persons with HIV/AIDS at the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania and teaching and supervising law students who represented low income persons in a variety of civil matters at both Drexel University School of Law and Villanova University School of Law. She is the primary author of Pennsylvania’s Standby Guardianship Act which became law in December, 1998. Join us for an evening with inspirational guest speakers on Wednesday, March 11, 7-9 pm. Power of Protest explores one of the most successful human rights campaigns to date. The panel exhibition showcases Americans’ efforts in the late 1960s through 1990 to free refuseniksJews who lived in the Soviet Union and were denied the rights to live... freely, practice Judaism, or leave the country due to their religion.
