PRESS RELEASE: October 26, 2020 Mayor Announces Police Promotions Mayor Bob Donchez announced today the following promotions in the City of Bethlehem Police Department.... Rodney Bronson has been promoted to the rank of Captain. His last held assignment was Lieutenant of the Community Services Division. He has served the Department since 2000. Through this time, he has filled various roles in the Patrol Division from officer to lieutenant. He served as a Community Police Officer in the Bethlehem Housing Authority unit and served as a School Resource Officer assigned to Liberty High School. We are confident that his strong background in Community Policing will serve the department well in his new role as Captain of the Patrol Division. Michael Leaser has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. His last held assignment was Sergeant assigned to the Mounted Unit. In addition to that role, Lieutenant Leaser is an Assistant Team Leader on the Department’s Emergency Response Team. He has served the Department since 2004. Sergeant Leaser was an integral part to the development and success of the Department’s mounted unit when it was re-established a little over a decade ago. The relationships and outreach conducted with the mounted unit will serve Lieutenant Leaser well in his new assignment as Lieutenant of the Community Services Division. Eric Yeakel has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His last held assignment was Training Officer in the Professional Standards Division. In addition to that role, Sergeant Yeakel is a Marksman Team Leader on the Department’s Emergency Response Team. He has served the Department since 2001. Sergeant Yeakel’s robust background in teaching subjects such as use of force, de-escalation, report writing, and department policy during his assignment in the Professional Standards Division will serve him well as a first line supervisor. In his new role as Patrol Sergeant with the 4th Platoon, he will interact with officers on a daily basis assisting officers not only as their direct supervisor but as a teacher guiding them through their investigations and calls for service.

Message from Mayor Donchez regarding parklets: In an effort to try to continue to help our restaurants and retail downtown, I have decided to extend the use of the parklets until December 4. During the week of November 16, I will reevaluate the use of parklets and future weather projections. If the outlook is positive, parklets will be out through December 31, 2020. It is also my goal to make the parklets an annual event. I believe it adds a lot to our downtowns. Again, depending on weather, I will look to tentatively bring back the parklets late March or early April.

Message from the Fire Marshal regarding open burning in the City of Bethlehem: Every year the cooler weather brings an increased number of fire incidents as well as questions and complaints involving open burning within the City. The use of solid fuel fire pits, solid fuel portable outdoor fire places and any other open burning is a violation of City Ordinance 1501 which adopts the International Fire Code. Portable outdoor fireplaces may be approved in some circumstances fo...r special events if all requirements of the Fire Code can be met. Formal approval from the Fire Marshal is required prior to the event. Propane or Natural Gas outdoor fireplaces are permitted as long as they have an Underwriter’s Laboratory Listing or are certified by a recognized third party certifying agency. These fireplaces must always be operated per the manufacturer’s instructions. In instances where the manufacturer’s instructions are not immediately available, the International Fire Code will be used to determine the operating guidelines and clearances to combustible materials. The basic requirements from the Fire Code mandate the fire place to be located a minimum of 5 feet from any building and 5 feet from ANY combustible material. The fireplace must also be maintained following the manufacturer’s guidelines. The Fire Department’s policy for dealing with open burn violations is to issue a Notice of Violation on the first offense in most instances. The Notice of Violation is kept on record for documentation purposes and no fines are given. A second offense by the same person or at the same address will result in a non-traffic citation being issued to the offending party resulting in a fine of up to $1000 dollars plus court costs. If there are any questions or concerns regarding these regulations please contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at [email protected] or by calling 610-865-7143. See more
