Use of lights during low light/ dark conditions, as it pertains to pistolcraft. These are my opinions and they are based on my experiences and training. A weapon mounted light [WML] is for target identification only. It's not used to find your way, it's not used to read a sign. The third rule of gun safety is "Never point your weapon at anything you are not willing to destroy". Anything you aim your WML at you are also pointing your gun at. Last night's NIGHT SHOOT. I am going describe the middle bay stage from last night. Shooter started off with only 7 rounds in the gun, but unlimited reloads. First the shooter had to utilize his light to read one of 4 tongue twisters that we had on a white board. They needed to say it quick, and loud. During this, the range officer would call out "THREAT!" and the shooter would turn and engage targets at the far side of the range. They had to identify which targets were ...hostile and which were innocent by looking for weapon identifiers. Once those were neutralized, they moved to a hostage situation behind a wall. There was a lone gunman with two police officers on the ground, and an innocent person with a cell phone. One of the officers had a visible weapon. There was also a flashing police light from their patrol car going, which made visibility more difficult. Some of this mistakes that were observed : Shooters used their weapon mounted light to read the sign. Shooters with a weapon mounted light did not have a second light. Shooters leaving the light on at all times. Shooters performing a reload with the light on. Shooters shot the person with the cell phone. Shooters shot the downed officer because the saw his weapon, but failed to see the large patch that said "FEDERAL AGENT". Shooters took body shots at the man with the explosives vest, instead of head shots. There was a hostile target partially obscured by an innocent, and that innocent was shot by accident. I will do a second post to discuss light usage and weapon mounted lights. Does anyone care to share your experiences last night?
