Today is a beautiful sunny day for a #FoodRescue! Our volunteer Jennifer recently picked up these six boxes of rescued food from ALDI Download the app to start claiming rescues!

We have to stop and say thank you to Fifth Season for raising $500 through their "Like Donation Drive" on Instagram yesterday! Not only are they a wonderful local business and a trusted food donor for 412 Food Rescue, but they went the extra mile and offered to donate $1 per like on their post up to $500, and you guys hit that in less than 24 hours! Looking to cut #FoodWaste in your own kitchen? Here are some of our favorite tips! #1. Store hardy vegetables like carrots, celery, and even avocado (once it's cut) in water to prolong freshness. Store leafy greens with a dry paper towel to absorb any moisture and keep them crisp! #2. When produce nears the end of its shelf life, freeze what you can for future use - this makes future dinner prep easy! ... #3. When in doubt, try a new recipe! There are websites like SuperCook that let you search for recipes using the exact ingredients you have on hand. Our favorite go-tos for old produce are vegetable soup, stir fry, or banana bread! #EndFoodWaste

The majority of food items donated to food banks are typically non-perishable boxed and canned food items. On average, food banks are only able to provide approximately one gallon of milk per person per year (source: Feeding America) due to the fragility of soon-to-expire goods. Thanks to #FoodRescueHeroes (like you!) in our local community, these goods with a short shelf-life are delivered straight to people who need them! #FoodRescue #EndHunger #EndFoodWaste

#CommunityTakeout Round 2 has begun, and participation has doubled! Kicking off 2021, we have 19 local restaurants pledging to prepare a total of 2,850 meals per week for people facing food insecurity in our community. This initiative not only supports local restaurants and workers recovering from the pandemic, but supplies fresh meals to those who need it most. A big thanks to Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, City of Pittsburgh, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation for making this possible! #EndHunger

Here’s something to celebrate: in 2020, you #FoodRescueHeroes helped rescue 7.6 million pounds of food, equaling over 6.3 million meals for families in need around our city!
