You’ve got COMMAND - but do you have a CLUE? I’ve got command - these words are thrown out loosely on the radio all the time. Sometimes the person ass...uming command knows what they’re taking on, and what they’re responsible for, and how to do it. And sometimes they don’t... Sometimes you just have someone who thinks it’s COOL to be in charge, but doesn’t understand the responsibility, what the job is, or how to do it. I’ve seen people race to the scene so they can be command and then clearly have no idea what they’re doing once they are. The definition of being in command is being able to, through the incident’s chain of command and organization, control the location and action of all members on scene. If you can’t do that - you’re just responsible. Do you want to be RESPONSIBLE for something you have NO CONTROL over? Just calling yourself command, or a chief, by itself doesn't mean you have a clue how to run a fire. Being successful in command is having a methodical system that you have TRAINED on and PRACTICED. So that on a tough scene at 3am you carry it out like second nature. This must be developed, much like building familiarity with calculating your engine’s PDP, or troubleshooting a tough forcible entry challenge. Your preparation, or lack there of, will be very evident at the fire. A huge part of being in command is realizing what your job is, and what it is not. Managing the span of control and not becoming overwhelmed. Being the incident commander, and not just another firefighter. Command does not put the fire out, but COMMAND MATTERS. I’ve seen too many scenes go to crap because of weak command. Why limit our excellent firefighting abilities with weak commanders??? If we have strong firefighters, AND strong commanders - we are an exponential force. When either is weak, the citizens ultimately suffer. Hence - Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting. We’ll discuss practical and fireground proven command practices on our live presentation of Aggressive Command Supports Aggressive Firefighting. Wednesday, 12/9 at 1900hrs. Includes access to recording afterwards. Sign up at link in my bio.
