One year ago, none of us expected what was to come. From lockdowns to masking to social distancing, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the entire world. For childhood cancer families, one year in a pandemic has doubled the pressure and the uncertainty. Here’s a look back at the top stories from one year in a global pandemic.

For Katherine G. Tarlock, MD, of the University of Washington and Seattle Children's, becoming a physician scientist focused on pediatric leukemia was a perfect blend of helping children and their families alongside her love of research. During Dr. Tarlock’s pediatric oncology fellowship, she applied for and received an Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) Young Investigator (YI) grant designed to support early career researchers and to provide funding to conduct their research alongside their clinical practice. "Today is my daughter’s 25th birthday. She isn’t here to celebrate with us her last birthday with us was when Alex was just 8 years old. Alex is not physically here but her heart, her beliefs and her legacy are everywhere I look. Alex had a pure belief in victory and it was a belief that did not quit even when her body did. Alex believed she could change things for other kids. She never said it was too late, and she pushed toward goals that at the time seemed unattainab...le; like the goal to raise $1 million for childhood cancer research. When I am struggling with the difficulty of this goal of curing childhood cancer, it is Alex’s belief in the power of all us families, supporters, researchers, everyone that keeps me putting one foot in front of the other. And while today is when we celebrate Alex’s birthday, I know also that today and every day, children with cancer are celebrating more birthdays and milestones. This knowledge is what gives me what I need to take one more step, and then another and another, so that I can see the finish line in our future. Alex believed we would cross it she believed in cures and she believed the only way to cross that finish line was together. Alex is at the heart of it all for me, as her mother, for Jay, as her father, and for her brothers Patrick, Joey and Eddie. Even though Alex is not standing here next to us, we have the gifts of experiencing her grit, her wisdom and her sheer refusal to give up. I am happy for the memories I have of my daughter and I am so happy for the legacy she left us all. I am happy for the lemonade and the cures that will happen for children with cancer. Every year on January 18, we remember our founder Alex Scott and celebrate her belief that everyone can make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer. That belief has brought us this far and will bring us all the way to cures.

Year after year, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's (ALSF) #LemonBall leaves a lasting impact for kids fighting cancer. The 15th year of this momentous event might have been the most unique to date. For the first time ever, supporters came together virtually to honor the legacy of Alexandra Alex Scott and continue the fight against childhood cancer. Not only did past sponsors, benefactors, and guests return once again, but we were able to introduce The Lemon Ball to new sup...porters from across the country. Most importantly, we raised nearly $600,000, which is enough to fund two ALSF Reach Grants! These critical grants help researchers translate new discoveries in the lab into clinical trials for kids with cancer. We thank everyone for your immense support during such a challenging time. It will truly make a difference in the lives of children and families facing this disease.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Camden Catholic High School Lemon Club installed an interactive mural to inspire the school community to be the "I" in "Kind." Members of the school community were encouraged to share their favorite Dr. King quote as part of the mural. This year, our founder Alex Scott's 25th birthday coincided with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Liz Scott, Alex's mom, often reflects on Dr. King’s wisdom and famous words, that darkness cannot drive out darkness, that only light can do that. Liz said that it "reminds [her] of Alex in so many ways, but mostly of her firm belief that we can make lemonade, and that anyone is capable of making a change for children with cancer."

For most of his career, #AlexsLemonade-funded researcher Robert Wechsler-Reya, PhD from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, has been searching for cures to medulloblastoma, the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor.

On August 18, 2020, the RACE for Children Act went into effect and requires pharmaceutical companies to evaluate new drugs in children with cancer as they develop drugs for adults. We'd like to thank everyone who participated in the Virtual End Childhood Cancer 5K - Halloween Edition on Saturday and made it a great success. We received an outpouring of support from across the country, with more than 1,500 participants walking and running with us virtually. Together, we raised enough to fund one year of an Epidemiology Grant, which focuses on early detection and prevention of childhood cancer. In 2016, Lakelynn was just 3 years old when she diagnosed with a rare sarcoma, with an even rarer genetic mutation intermeshed in the nerves of her right arm. There was only one option: a clinical trial at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, funded by Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) and led by Dr. Steven Dubois. The trial was for a drug called larotrectinib, which had shown promise for kids battling cancer that expressed the NTRK fusion. The trial worked. Lakelynn’s tumor s...hrunk. Over 75% of the patients on the same trial also experienced positive results, which led to the FDA approval of larotrectinib in December 2018. In the past ten years, less than 30 new drugs have been approved by the FDA for pediatric oncology applications. ALSF supported the research that led to the approval of at least nine of these new drug therapies. Lakelynn's cancer won't be gone without more research. Read more - https://bit.ly/34j9ejb

Eli began his battle with neuroblastoma at 4 years old. When his local children’s hospital had done all they could, Eli was still not better. Desperate for options, his parents learned of a promising treatment plan at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia 1,200 miles from their home in Little Rock, Arkansas. The distance was daunting, until Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation reached out. They said that they’re going to start this Travel For Care fund, recalled Dawn, Eli’s mom.... ‘We know that you're coming back and forth, we want to be able to help you. Would you guys be willing to participate in this new program?’ We were like, ‘absolutely.’ 57 trips and 12 years later, Eli was changing the future of childhood cancer.
