Amazing Grace Veterinary Acupuncture

Koalaty Kare = Acupuncture! Meet Lottie, our 17 year old koala and mother to every joey born here at Riverbanks! Recently our animal care staff noticed Lott...ie moving around slower and having difficulty climbing. Riverbanks’ veterinarians initially suspected arthritis because of her advanced age, but x-rays showed that while she has some arthritis, it wasn’t the main cause of discomfort. A physical exam revealed that Lottie had very tight muscles in her lower back. This is very similar to people who have low back pain imagine climbing trees to get your dinner when your back is sore! Riverbanks’ staff veterinarian decided that acupuncture treatment could help to reduce muscle tension and relieve her back pain. Our veterinarians like to think of acupuncture as an additional tool in their toolbox, not as a stand-alone treatment. Lottie continues to receive pain medications and joint supplements as needed alongside this acupuncture treatment. With the help of tiny needles (about the size of a human hair) Lottie has been receiving weekly acupuncture treatments. During these sessions Lottie gets to decide if she wants to participate or not. If she doesn’t feel like having acupuncture that day, she is free to move away and end her session. Her comfort is always top priority! Since beginning these acupuncture treatments last fall, our animal care staff have seen tremendous improvements to Lottie’s mobility and climbing. She has improved so much that acupuncture sessions have been decreased from twice a week, now down to once every two weeks. Talk about some top notch KOALATY Kare!
