Another Wow from the Americus' vault here on Hamilton...this is the original copy of the rooming list for then V.P. Richard Milhouse Nixon's visit to Allentown on October 22nd, 1960. Yeah, we know, you weren't even born yet... You'll notice Senator Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania at the bottom of the list and moving up, Attorney General William Pierce Rogers appears as well. Go further north from there and you'll notice two names in rooms 201 and 204 that played a significant ro...le in the Watergate investigation. Rosemary Woods and H.R. Haldeman. No matter where the truth lies, Woods will be remembered for the infamous 18.5-minute gap in one of the Watergate tapes, not because she erased it, but because she said she had erased only part of it by mistake. Haldeman, Nixon's loyal Chief of Staff, played a major part in the "Smoking Gun" tape revealed that Nixon instructed Haldeman to have the CIA pressure the FBI into dropping its Watergate investigation. All in all, a day in Allentown history that we just couldn't pass up telling you about!

Time for another Americus, "Did You Know"? In May 1972, Frederick Hahneman stayed at the hotel for several days under the name George Ames. Hahneman, 49, was a distraught engineer. On May 5, he sat in the hotel lobby, ate a cherry cheese pie with a coke and then went to the A-B-E airport where he hijacked an Eastern Airlines jet headed for Miami. After a series of stops including transferring from one plane to another, Hahneman parachuted out of the plane into a Central American jungle with $303,000 in cash. Nearly a month later he turned himself in at the U.S. Embassy in Honduras. Sounds like he could give DB Cooper a run for his...well, you know where we're going...

So, when you're restoring an amazing building like the Americus, the story within the story can be inspirational. The amount of detail work on our ceiling and support beams in the lobby was exquisite when the hotel was open at it's peak. Now, we're taking the time, effort and energy to bring it back to its' original luster. Meet Arny Benitez, Jose Penaloza and Antonio Melendez...these three are our local Michelangelo's making each paint stroke count for the long-term! Thank you to all three of you for working to make this exceptional moment of magic!

Because he has completely refurbished this amazing piece of history to it's original condition from 93 years ago. These past few weeks our men have been working on perfecting the walls and ceilings. We have master plasterers, sanders and painters. It’s a lot of square feet to cover. Butch works with stilts for better control on ceilings. It’s looking really good! Photo provided by Lori Patrick Images

Over 325 windows are being replaced. This view is the inside peak of 11th floor facing Hamilton St. Through time the peak windows were ‘shortened’ by two panes on bottom. They are now restored to original specs. Looking great! Another big event starts on Monday! This photo represents our sample window already installed. And now ALL of the windows in the building from floor 1 to 11 are being delivered and the complete install will begin. We have chosen an original replica made by Pella. In 1967 and 68 Eric Quimby, pictured on right worked at the Americus as a bus boy and room service during weekends for the patrons who visited the neighboring Lyric Theater for Burlesque shows. Charter busses brought people from other cities here. The plate was salvaged by Eric as they were being purged from the kitchen. Holding the plate is Jo Evans who kindly kept it safe through the years. Quimby also was a match book collector and donated those pertaining to the Americus. You can see some of his notes in the second picture. We will proudly display these items in our heritage case with genuine thanks to Eric snd Jo.

Happening right now at the Americus Hotel. Our historical replica doors have arrived for all the rooms in the hotel. You will see these doors when you walk the halls through every floor. Today we are in progress with our new kitchen floor! The existing floor was completely sanded and the epoxy is being applied now. It’s a beautiful deep grey shade. We had a big surprise when the roofers took away the layers over the Grand Ballroom floor. Just look at this tile! What it tells us is back in the origin of the hotels history, it was used as a space for entertainment, possibly dining and parties too. If anyone has stories from likely 60 to 90 years ago, let us know on this post. The discovery is endless at the Americus. Our surprise for you is Albert is planning to make this roof space an area for the same reasons mentioned above. While he can’t use the same tile... new roofing first, you will have a rooftop for great memories before you know it. Photos provided by Lori Patrick Images

These matches, found by one of our roofers above the Grand Ballroom ceiling were likely from the first opening of the Americus and left by construction crew there. They were covered in dust and both books are empty. Sterling Hotel Systems was a management group founded in Wilkes-Barre with it’s namesake after ‘Emma Sterling’. The first hotel opened in 1897 belonging to this group. We will add these to our artifact case. ... Photo provided by Lori Patrick Images

In the November issue of Connections - Chamber of Commerce, Albert showed support at the First Keystone Community Banks ribbon cutting that celebrated the new branch in the Lehigh Valley located in the Main Street Commons (close to Brew Works) First Keystone has financed the Americus Hotel restoration project. These are exciting times for both companies.
