Calling all Young People ages 13-19: The St. Photios National Shrine is proud to announce the theme for its annual essay contest, reflecting on the welcoming of... immigrants to this nation. The St. Photios National Shrine commemorates the first Hellenic settlers to arrive in the New World, as well as celebrating the many immigrants to the United States and their experience in this nation. Many of those immigrants came to America through Ellis Island in New York City and would have viewed the Statue of Liberty upon entering New York Harbor. There, at the pedestal of Lady Liberty, is memorialized a plaque with the poem The New Colossus, by Emma Lazarus, with the most famous line reading, Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free

According to some, Hosea, whose name means "God is help," was from the tribe of Issachar, or more likely, from that of Reuben; he was the son of Beeri. He is the first in order of the twelve minor Prophets and the most ancient of all. He prophesied in the days of the divided Kingdom; the Lord told him to take a harlot to wife (Hosea 1:2), and then an adulteress (ibid., 3:1). The harlot, a known sinner, was a figure of the Kingdom of Israel in Samaria, which openly worshipped ...idols; the adulteress, lawfully married yet sinning secretly with her lovers, was a figure of the Kingdom of Judah in Jerusalem, which, while having the Temple, and the priesthood, and the divine worship according to the Law, stealthily served the idols also. The Prophet Hosea prophesied for sixty years, and lived for some ninety years, from 810 to 720 B.C. His book is divided into fourteen chapters. See more

SAINT EULABIOS and AGIA EFLABIA, the brothers lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian (296 AD). The persecution against Christians was cruel and merciless. For this reason, Eulabius and his sister Eulampia were hiding with other Christians on the mountain. There, they lived cultivating prayer and the study of the Holy Scriptures. One day, Eulabius went to Nicomedia to get food. But the pagans recognized him and immediately arrested him. Of course, when asked by the king if... he believes in Christ, he professed that he is a Christian, so he was put in a pagan temple to sacrifice by force. Eulacius, however, through prayer crushed the idol of the god Ares. And while they began to whip him in the most inhuman way, his sister Eulampia rushed, and after hugging him, she begged God to claim her to join her brother. Then they put both of them in a cauldron with boiling water. But miraculously they cooled down, and so they came out safe and sound. This made 200 pagans believe in Christ, who along with Eulabios and Eulampia were beheaded in favor of the Lord's truth. And as the word of God says, ''Glory and honor and peace for all the workers the good', that is, glory and honor and peace shall be given to everyone who works the good and dies for it'' To the Romans, 2 10. AMARYLLIS The name AMARYLLIS comes from the ancient Greek amarissos which means Lambo. Thus, as an etymological derivative, it can be celebrated on October 10th of Agia EYLABIA See more

SAINT THOMAS, the Apostle, was among the twelve disciples of the Lord and belonged to a family of fishermen. Thomas, after Christ's Resurrection and His first appearance to the disciples, disbelieved in what they were telling him. But the Lord reappeared to the disciples in the palate when Thomas was among them. Then the Lord exhorted Thomas to palpate the wounds from the nails that crucified Him and not to become unbelieving, but faithful. Dazzled, Thomas worshipped and went... up: ''My Lord and my God.'' The Lord's answer was such that he would teach all who want to disbeliev in the truth of the gospel. So said the Lord: ''that you have been with me, you are a believer. Blessed are those who are not beholded and believed'' (Gospel of John, k' 24-29). That is, says the Lord to Thomas, ''you believed because you saw me. Blissful and more fortunate are those who, although they did not see me, believed.'' Tradition has it that Thomas, after the bestowal of the Holy Spirit, went and preached the Gospel to the Persians, Medes and Indians. In the land of the latter, he was martyred by death by lance. Thus, God demanded him not only to preach His gospel, but also to give his life for Him. See more

October 28, 1940 TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE AGIA SKEPI (HOLY PROTECTION) And let us not forget why we were victorious even when we were so heavily outnumbered. Because the bravery of the soldier was given courage & assurance of the AGIA SKEPI (HOLY PROTECTION) of Our Most Holy Theotokos, the Ever Virgin Mary. There are numerous accounts from Greek soldiers of what happened in different parts of Greece as the battles of WWII raged, accounts of MIRACLES thanks to the Holy Mother ...of God who would protect the righteous, protect those on the right side of a senseless war. The date AGIA SKEPI is celebrated for centuries was October 1st after She first appeared to the Byzantine Greeks when Constantinople was saved from invaders in around 627AD but this date was later changed to October 28 by the Church of Greece in 1952 to coincide with the numerous accounts of miracles which helped the Greek forces & citizens in WWII. Apolytikion (Dismissal) Hymn. Tone Fourth Today the faithful celebrate the feast with joy illumined by your coming, O Mother of God. Beholding your pure image we fervently cry to you: "Encompass us beneath the precious veil of your protection; deliver us from every form of evil by entreating Christ, your Son and Our God that He may save our souls. Kontakion Hymn. Tone Third Today the Virgin stands in the midst of the Church and with choirs of Saints she invisibly prays to God for us. Angels and bishops worship, Apostles and Prophets rejoice together, since for OUR sake she prays to the Pre-Eternal God. Glory be to The Father & to The Son & to The Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages, amen!!!

Just as Jesus, taking his flesh from Mary his Mother, no doubt bore a striking resemblance to her physically, so every true Christian resembles Mary spiritually. For it is by imitation of Mary, receiving the Word in a pure heart and saying together with her, "Be it unto me according to thy word" that we, too, become "God-bearers". If this be the case with us, it should suffice as proof that we are children of Mary indeed. So let us "arise and call her blessed" (Proverbs 31:28)!

Set aside half an hour of the 24 to say ... the Jesus Prayer. Whenever you are able, but evening is best. Say it without using the prayer rope- in supplication, pleading & with tears: Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me. Cultivate this & you will see the it will bring. From half an hour it will become an hour. And guard this hour. Whether the is ringing or you have this task you need to do now, or you’re , or some blasphemy is confronting you. Nothing, Turn off the... . Finish your tasks. Do this half hour & see. You’ve planted a little & tomorrow or the day after it will bear . Sts. John Chrysostom & Basil began like this & became Luminaries for the whole . St. Symeon the New Theologian had experiences of the uncreated while still a layman . He was a layman.
