This past week, our intern Maria (along with the rest of the Aramark interns) learned so much about nutrition support during her simulation week. She learned about the current nutrition recommendations for COVID-19 patients, enteral nutrition benefits, parenteral nutrition and how to successfully get through individualized calculations for each patient depending on their needs. Our intern, Taylor, celebrated her last day of Clinical 1 with homemade peppermint mocha donuts! These first few weeks have been full of information, new experiences, and lots of coffee! Happy Holidays from the Aramark Dietetic Internship! During these times, we reflect on things we are grateful for. At one site, our Dietetic Intern, Maggie, is grateful for the chance to work with a patient requiring medicinal leeches! She toured the "leech farm" in the pharmacy department, researched their benefits, and observed their role on her patient. In this case, the patient had a skin flap and to increase blood flow to this particular area to the skin, the plastic surgeon utilized 1 leech/hr. It's the little things that bring joy to us during the holidays, for some it is warm hugs, and for Maggie, it is her medicinal leeches! Our intern, Alexis, shares how she and another intern celebrated American Diabetes Month at their hospital: A couple of weeks ago, Analisa and I had the opportunity to pick out and help serve a diabetes-friendly meal at our hospital site’s cafeteria. November was American Diabetes Month and we chose a Mediterranean chicken grain bowl that contained 25 grams of carbohydrates. I created a flyer to promote the meal and they put it on the screen above the station where the meal was being served. Let me tell you- it was a HIT, all of the hospital employees loved it!! From our intern, Brooke: Although it’s only week 2 in the clinical setting, I have learned so much and worked with many people across the interdisciplinary team. My biggest highlight was working with a dialysis nurse and hearing all about her experience. This year's POY is described as personable, patient, enthusiastic, and demonstrates innovative teaching and education methods when working with interns. She tailors the internship experience for her interns by taking the opportunity to discuss their interests and then plan learning experiences within this interest area, such as participating at a farmer's market. Our dietetic interns complete a three week retail experience as part of their management rotation. Here is what one of our Houston interns, Nora, had to say about her rotation: My favorite rotation so far has been retail. As you can see, I love food! Anything related to food makes me happy. During my retail rotation, I was able to sample a lot of food items to see if they are a good fit for the C-Store. I have sampled items from energy bars to protein shakes. I was able to assist with the decoration of the C-Store - drawing on pumpkins and making a sign. I had the chance to go to a salad robot demo where the machine makes fresh salads for you. I loved creating my business retail project - Overnight Oats! It was a major hit!"

As part of her clinical rotation, our Philly intern, Wendy, had a chance to discuss supplements and the IDDSI guidelines with her preceptors. Afterwards, they all decided to have an impromptu taste test so they can clearly communicate with patients regarding what to expect when following a specific diet or texture modification.

One of our Fort Worth interns, Jane, recently completed her retail project. Here’s what she had to say about the experience: One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had so far in my internship is my retail business plan project! In this project we were assigned to develop a product to promote, market, and sell in order to meet an end goal, such as increasing daily sales. I chose to promote a build-your-own smoothie bowl bar. Not only did this project allow me to get creative and make nutritious, delicious, and BEAUTIFUL smoothie bowls, but it also benefited my site and increased sales by over 15%! This project helped me to grow as a professional and taught me so much about developing a successful retail business plan. Thank you, Aramark!

Our #dieteticinterns complete an 11-week management rotation to explore all areas of a food service department. Our NJ intern, Maria, had this to say about her production rotation: This picture was taken during my food service production rotation. I baked these batches of cookies for the hospital cafeteria and the patient tray line. This is a huge change from the clinical rotation. I'm exposed to many more things which I would have never had a chance to do otherwise - like placing orders for produce and taking inventories. It’s a great learning experience to observe all the hard work that takes place behind the scenes.

As a dietetic intern, being able to view medical procedures really makes what you are reading in charts come to life. Our Wichita Falls intern, Jada, was able to visit an endoscopy center recently to see several colonoscopies. Here’s what Jada had to say about the experience - It was fascinating to see procedures I’ve only heard of until now. I now have a better idea of how nutrition affects the GI system.

I knew that it would give me exceptional opportunities and experiences throughout the program and I was definitely not wrong. I am currently halfway through my internship and have already been able to see and do things that I never thought I would get the chance to. Finally, I really appreciated how Aramark was a distance program with pre-selected locations. It really alleviated a lot of the stress that I would have had trying to find my own preceptors and locations. The program has an ample amount of locations to choose from which is nice because I was able to match at a location near my hometown. I could go on and on but these are just a few reasons that make me extremely happy that I chose the Aramark Distance Dietetic Internship."

One of our Chicago dietetic interns, Elizabeth, was recently able to observe a cardiac catheterization with stent placement during her clinical rotation. Here’s what she had to say, In this procedure, a stent was put in the artery to relieve the blockage caused by build up in the artery's wall. My experience was very beneficial because everytime I provide a diet education for cardiovascular disease, I now know what to emphasize for the patient. I know how to explain the diet based on the procedure. I make sure the patient knows what the correlation is with the procedure and the cardiac diet. Our interns get the opportunity to experience numerous procedures including cardiac caths, barium swallow studies, NG tube placements and so much more throughout their clinical rotation.
