Carrie Furnace 30x40 Acrylic on canvas I visited here a while back & worked on this from a picture I took. I’ve been progressively working on bigger can...vases & trying to challenge myself with harder perspectives so this was a great exercise for me. I don’t automatically go into painting thinking I’m going to make it so colorful but my brain obviously really keys into colors so that must be part of my style. A little history: Carrie furnace opened in 1884 & ended production in 1982. During peak production they produced 1,000-1,250 TONS of iron a day. This is 1 of only 3 preserved industrial mass production blast furnaces left in the US. (Carrie Furnace in Pittsburgh, Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, PA & Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, AL) I’ve gotten to explore 2. Sadly a lot of people died working here. Mainly accidents, due to falls from having to climb high up with no protective restraints, steel burns that would cover their body & cook them to death or carbon monoxide poisoning that would suffocate them. Later on, people would also die of diseases from working without masks. Ghost tours state they can hear the sounds of people as if they were working at the mill. Interestingly enough, as I was working on this, I started noticing faces coming through unintentionally on the painting. Tell me if you can see them too. I’ll put my circled pic in the comments. If you enjoyed this, please like, comment & share! Thank you #Haunted #Pittsburgh #Art #Painting #CarrieFurnace #BlastFurnace See more
