A very interesting article from Time magazine. It's adapted from The Autistic Brain by Temple Grandin and Richard Panek (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2013) Again, it's encouraging us to look at the strengths and potential of people with autism, not their deficits. http://www.autismatlas.com/new_temple_grandin_whats_right_w
Finally, the sensory issues faced by people with autism that lead to their unique behaviors are being focused on. I'm a great believer in the conclusions drawn by this group of researchers. Now we need to start educating people about the sensory issues (using programs like ours) and start to look at how we can change the environment around people with autism to reduce sensory overstimulation and allow them to function more effectively. http://time.com/3905841/autism-hyperfunctional/
To all the superheroes in the Autism community, Happy Autism Awareness / Acceptance Day!!
Lets rename it World Autism Acceptance Day.
So the CDC is going to increase monitoring the incidence of autism. Could this money be spent in more useful ways? Just a thought..... http://www.disabilityscoop.com//cdc-stepping-up-aut/19946/

CARING FOR ADULTS WITH AUTISM from The Diane Rehm Show Members of the autism community refer to leaving high school as "falling off a cliff," as it marks the end of most government support services. Unemployment for these young adults is high, as are rates of social isolation, even when compared to people with other disabilities. Now, as 50,000 individuals on the autism spectrum enter adulthood each year, calls to address their needs are growing louder. We look at new efforts to support adults with autism.
