We are so excited to kick off our series with from State College Strength and Conditioning! All about Heather and the training she does at SCSC:... 1 /? Trainer/ coach for just over a year. I also teach skiing and I used to coach rock climbing! 2 ? I have been working at SCSC for a year in February. 3 ? The type of training I focus on with my clients depends on their goals! No matter the client though, I first focus on movement and improving any weaknesses that they may have. Once I know a client is moving well, we start to specialize a little bit more. 4 . My ideal client has a specific goal in mind and gives me a lot of feedback so that we can work together to make sure that their training is as good as it can be 5 ? Fun fact: I originally wanted to be a physical therapist. Being a trainer appealed to me because I didn’t just want to get clients back to baseline, I wanted to help them become the best possible version of themselves. 6 ’ ? MOBILITY MONDAYWEEK 11 Stretches for Pregnancy This week for Mobility Monday, we were inspired by our friends and patients who are expecting new moms. Thank you to our friend Dr. Workman of Posture & Poise for sharing her pregnancy experience with us! As your new baby grows, your body undergoes plenty of its own changes. Staying active and utilizing non-invasive adjunctive care options can make a huge difference in how you feel from trimester to trimester. ... We picked some of our favorite stretches for using throughout pregnancy: 1 RUNNER’S LUNGE: if performed properly, this stretch is worth its weight in gold. As you get further into your pregnancy, the easier it is to allow the weight of your belly to pull your back into a hyperlordosis. By using a posterior pelvic tilt, you can get a much deeper stretch than doing a traditional lunge stretch and help to improve your postural awareness. 2CAT/CAMEL STRETCH: this stretch is another good way to improve you postural awareness. It can help stretch your mid back and improve core muscle activation. 3DEADBUG EXERCISE: deadbug is a great way to challenge your intrinsic core muscles and to safely progress how challenging or easy you would like it to be. 4LATERAL NECK STRETCH: this stretch is great for anyone who notices their shoulders creeping toward their ears throughout the day. This could be from new sleeping or sitting postures. 5SEATED PIRIFORMIS STRETCH: this stretch is awesome for targeting the glutes, low back, and hips. MOBILITY MONDAYWEEK 6 Welcome to our sixth week of, Mobility Monday’s. Simple tips and tricks to live more pain-free. Last weekend, we had a blast getting to hang out (literally) with the climbers and staff at @climbnittany. We had so much fun, that we decided to dedicate this week’s mobility Monday to the climbing community. Our goals for this installment are to aid in shoulder and hip joint mobility. ***Keep an eye out for next week when we focus on forearm stretching..., a much needed addition to any climber’s mobility drills. 1KNEELING LAT STRETCH: bY opening the shoulders in the frontal plane, we can improve mobility and activation of the lats during climbs, a hugely important thing when making decisions on the wall. 2 KNEELING T-SPINE ROTATION: to building on the first stretch, we are able to target more of the muscles and tendons in the spiral line of the body, allowing the arms and torso to move more freely during difficult transitions while climbing. 3 FROG STRETCH: this stretch is for more than just climbers. However in this case, it can be incredibly helpful when getting better at finding footholds while climbing. 4KNEELING HALF SPLIT: this stretch builds off of stretch 3, allowing you to target more of your adductors. MOBILITY MONDAYWEEK 5 Welcome back to our fifth week of, Mobility Monday’s. Simple tips and tricks to live more pain-free. This week, our focus is on the femoroacetabular (hip) joints. Regardless of our level of activity or the type of training we perform, it’s common to experience the feeling of tightness in our hips (psa: this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re tight!). These stretches can be awesome for limbering up before lifting or after a long day of learning at Zoom... University. 1RUNNER’S LUNGE: if performed properly, this stretch is worth its weight in gold. Using a posterior pelvic tilt, you can get a much deeper stretch than doing a traditional lunge stretch. 2 90/90 STRETCH: this stretch takes a little more coordination to do but can be a great addition to your mobility routine. Not only does it stretch the hips, it helps with various muscles in your legs and can be performed progressively whether you’re Gumby or the Tin Man. 3 SEATED PIRIFORMIS STRETCH: this stretch is awesome for targeting the glutes, low back, and hips. If you’re someone who feels stiff when getting up from being at your desk for a while, this can be a great way to loosen up. 4ELEVATED HAMSTRING STRETCH: this stretch is easy to perform on a couch or bench. It is excellent for chronically tight hamstrings or for before/after leg day. Make sure you have something to hold on to if struggle with balance.
