A short sale in real estate refers to a sale that takes place when a financially distressed homeowner sells their property for less than the amount due on the mortgage, according to Investopedia. The buyer of the property also isn’t a bank it’s a third party. And all the proceeds from the sale go to the lender. . From there, the lender typically decides on one or two options: they may choose to forgive the remaining balance or they may choose to place a deficiency judgment on the homeowner.
