From BG Horticulturist Katie: What’s not to love about the Florida Anise Tree (Illicium Floridanum)? Not only is it reliably evergreen but it also has aromatic foliage and a really long bloom season which give way to fragrant starry seed pods. Find ours showing off its seed set in the Carr Garden!

Wondering what spotted lanternfly eggs look like? Wonder no more! This is a large collection of egg deposits; each individual group is roughly the size of a squished piece of gum. They can be hard to spot and you can find them on just about any outdoor surface (check under your car!) but they are fortunately easy to scrape off and smoosh. From @philaparkandrec: Spotted lanternflies are an invasive species that start to lay their eggs in October. You can help limit next year’s lanternfly population!

Handmade Holidays is almost here, and things will look a little different this year On Friday, online sales will open for wreath orders (pick-up 12/5) and gifts from our incredible local vendors. More on those in another post! We'll only be selling our 16" Bartram Signature wreaths this year, and our inventory is limited to 100. We also won't be selling loose greens. We do this as a part of an effort to reconsider our relationship with the land and those we share it with. Harvesting greens for wreaths is both time and resource intensive, and now more than ever it feels vital to shift our ways of doing things to center on giving back to the land, rather than taking from it. We thank you for understanding!

Need a little green in your home? Here are a couple of plants you can put in a sunny window during the winter and bring out in spring/summer (available at bartrams-garden.myshopify.com!) Talinum paniculatum (left) otherwise called Jewels of Opar, is a tender perennial plant that likes to reseed itself all over the Carr Garden. The plantings we have for sale were grown up from those seedlings. This plant is native to the Caribbean and Southeast parts of the United States. Put ...this beauty in a sunny window at home and you will see the beautiful purple jewels that emerge from the flowers. The Bartram/Carr family is known to have collected an assortment of geraniums (Pelargonium sp.). The powerful fragrance of citrus will surely wake you up after an exhausting day! Geraniums, otherwise known as pelargoniums originated from South Africa and then were cultivated in Europe and North America.
