Today is Dress Like Your Favorite Superhero Day. In this modern world of disposable plastic toys, electronics, and social media that seems to feed only the superficial aspects of our lives, I found a glimmer of hope in this beautiful child. The imaginative, ingenious child is not lost. Are you a superhero farmer? I asked. I’m Supergirl! she said. ... Those are my weapons. she said, reaching around, pointing to her back. Because she couldn’t have weapons in school, she improvised. Wooden spoons and celery tucked into the pockets of an apron cape. What a clever child! I’ve spent years of my life thinking tactically. Continuously spinning the OODA loop. Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. Repeat. And in the worst situations, I’ve learned to improvise, adapt and overcome. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The simplest instructions for whatever life hurls at you. The people who knew me as a child, cannot believe I work in law enforcement. And the people who didn’t know me as a child, cannot believe I write poetry and paint. The dichotomy seems strange, I know. How does an artist end up in this line of work? I had no explanation for this, until now... Thank you, Supergirl. I found a little bit of myself in you today. That little spitfire girl in a pink leotard and tutu, wearing silver spray painted rain boots. That sassy little girl, building a moss and mud home for a spotted salamander in her mom’s very best china bowl. Thank you. I thought she was lost. It turns out, my greatest weapon has always been my imagination. It has been my right brain, supporting my left brain all along! Simply put, if you can imagine the impossible, the foolishly impractical, you’ll be ready when it comes. Never fear, there is a place for you in this world, Supergirl. And there is a very important job for you. You are the next woman warrior poet. The shoes are big, and the road is long, but what an amazing adventure it will be! Godspeed. <3 SRO Lucinda
