PLEASE JOIN US! Returning to Beth Israel for a guest appearance on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 pm will be Jack Markowitz, business columnist at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Markowitz has been 60 years in the news industry. Mr. Markowitz will speak on a fascinating book of memoirs, privately printed. It is titled Building Dreams and was written by Efraim Margolin of New York City. ... Mr. Margolin is 92 years old and still active in a number of businesses. He goes to his office every weekday at Margolin Consultants Inc., in midtown Manhattan. His memoir tells of a very adventurous life, starting with arrival in Israel (then Palestine) in 1921 while still a babe in arms. His parents were fleeing a murderous pogrom in Ukraine. At age 14 he attended a technical high school in Haifa, showed a knack for mechanical and construction equipment and helped the British Army in World War II expand the major oil refinery at Abadan, Iran. He later helped build the city of Beersheva in Israel’s Negev, met David Ben-Gurion, eventually transferred to New York where he tried -- and failed -- at several business ventures, but prospered eventually as head of a personnel agency specializing in placing engineers. He and his wife Florence (they’re married 64 years) endowed the Margolin Peace Forest (40,000 trees) at Kiryat Gat, Israel, and he has interesting views about life, careers, and Israel’s current situation.
