HAPPY GOSHDANG NEW YEAR!! . We celebrate today with the hope that 2021 will bring us all closer, that we will all keep our hearts open, find the peace we need in our spirits, and always remember to share kindness whenever we can with all the fragile beings of earth. We are all one family, and we are in this together .... . And NYD LENTILS! -- a newer tradition in our Black Cat household, brought to us by our lovely friend Maria (@cuentacuentosphiladelphia ), whose spirit unexpectedly returned to the light of the Universe in the waning months of 2020. Maria, we miss you very much and I think of you often when I cook --especially now, when sharing and carrying on traditions seems so extra important. It's interesting to reflect on how even seemingly small details can make such an impact on another's life. I hope this year's lentils have done your (amazingly delish!) recipe proud & that they properly honor the memories of warmth, friendship, and of course, beautiful thoughtfully-prepared dishes! Missing you especially today (but now we can have another chuckle together at how, try as I might, I just cannot pretty-up a photo of cooked lentils ; ) hah! . Cheers to you all! OPATEK! Fiiinally got time to try making oplatek! Much iron research + a lot of doing to land here. They turned out...ok...ish at least for a first try, so we're pretty psyched. Gotta tinker with the batter, but these are decent enough to share with some fam. Maybe we'll aim to perfect these to share at the bar next year, when we can hopefully all be back together again!! . So..why opatek? + what in the goodgolly is it?... ... Oplatek (said: uh-pwah-tek) is a Polish/Eastern European Christmas tradition of a decoratively embossed wafer, shared with family + friends as a symbol of "breaking bread", wishing good health + prosperity for the year to come. . An annual Christmas Dinner tradition at the Grandmom Tkaczuk Haus, followed by pierogis + kielbasy + jewel-like barley sugar lollipops, deep dark gingerbread dipped in chocolate, stockings full of whole walnuts + food-coma dreams. Such a fantastical warmth of that family Christmas memory makes me wanna wrap myself back in that heavy down comforter of blissful childhood nostalgia. I want to get back to that world...or share as much of it as I can with everyone .
