Change for Children Every holiday season since the 1989, the students and staff at Blue Mountain High School have conducted an annual coin drive with the aim of raising money to be used to provide comfort and cheer to less fortunate families throughout the school district and the local community. Through the simple act of asking students to donate the spare change they have in their pockets, the organizers of the event (Social Studies Honor Society) have managed to raise in e...xcess of $150,000 over the past 32 years. This program has accomplished much for the local community over the past 40 years. What has the money been used for? In a Secret Santa approach, we have purchased innumerable gifts for kids ranging from infant all the way up to high school including bicycles, sporting equipment, art supplies, books, clothing, board games, electronics anything they put on their Santa’s wish list, we try to meet their need. Some of the funding has also been used to support the local women’s shelter to assist in buying clothing, microwaves, and other essentials for child-rearing and to help these women maintain their independence in the local community. We also celebrate the purchase of dozens of food baskets every year to be sent to the local food pantries or individuals in order to meet that ever growing need. The gifts are delivered to the recipients in the days just before the holiday in order to give them an uplifting and positive aspect to their holiday season. In the past, students would collect the money, count it, package it and then do the shopping and hand deliver the gifts to the community. Unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic and current restrictions regarding meeting in large groups, frequenting public places, and touching unclean surfaces, we are unable to collect and count the funds in the traditional manner. This is impossible to do under present conditions, but we do not want to see this worthwhile charitable tradition come to an end another victim of the COVID pandemic. This is why we are turning to the general public for help in this noble endeavor. What would normally be a unifying activity for the entire school has now been taken away due to the pandemic and we are hoping that in this new approach, people will still remember to conduct acts of generosity and kindness towards others. All of the proceeds are spent directly on residents in the local community. So please, search your hearts and consider donating as little or as much as possible to this most worthy cause that benefits local community children and their families. https://www.gofundme.com/f/bmhs-change-for-children
