Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy has been around for well over a decade and fairly popular for ~three years. Why am I a bit late to the party on this? Over the last three years, I was simply unwilling to experiment on my clients -with this modality-. But I was reading, and the legitimate peer reviewed studies just weren’t there...yet. I was watching my own clients who had it done previously or elsewhere. I looked at their protocols and saw there was no standard, they wer...e literally all over the place. I heard their stories, how it seemed to help for this but mostly just seemed to irritate that. Some therapists and athletic trainers seemed to be using it for every diagnosis under the sun, and that just didn’t seem right. I mean...you wouldn’t put a tourniquet on someone with sprained ankle...would you. Well, now there’s much more legitimate research out, with somewhat standardized protocols and clinical pathways...better and worse ways to go about actually implementing BFR. We know BFR is actually great for some problems at certain points of recovery, but not effective for other problems and other points on the recovery timeline. There is still plenty of work to be done, with grey area. For example, I know that I’m not going to slap a cuff on the sensitive neurovascular structures around the elbow of a pitcher. But I may do it for a client with lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) from gardening. **BFR has proven to be good to stimulate increases in muscle strength and size **when you cannot load the area with heavier loads.** Give me a shout if you have any questions about BFR! #physicaltherapy #sportsperformance #gains #postop #orthopedics

...and how do you think I learned about the value of varying workout intensities, taking some days altogether off, and avoiding canisters of fluorescent powder? Ignore the physical therapist (and your dad), and you, too, can learn the slow, expensive, injury-laden bone-headed way!

Hey - - -! I’m seriously happy to see all the progress you are making. Your DEDICATION is the reason for it. It truly takes months and years, and it’s worth the time, not just for physical gains. There truly are no shortcuts. So...stay the course! But please don’t bring any smelling salts or other b.s. around here. Especially not with a PR deadlift of 315. Well, once you are approaching a triple body weight DL and double body weight bench and can do a legit pull-up or few with 100 lbs strapped to your waist, you’re definitely welcome to bring almost anything you need. And teach me a few things you learned.

ARE MORE ELABORATE BRACE$ BETTER? Not long ago, the orthopedic world assumed that an elaborate, custom-fitted brace provided superior outcomes to other less customized off the shelf braces, or no brace at all. It turns out that assumption was wrong, and behemoths like this $1400 knee brace were not justified. Notice that custom is in quotes, because taking a few circumference measures of the involved body part does not truly allow for an actual customized, form-fitting ...product. The brace companies and reps never mentioned that.. Anyway, I’m of the belief, and have witnessed over the years, that using braces for mechanical support of a joint is over-rated in most but not all instances (In the athletic population.) There are a few reasons as to why this is so, but they are beyond the scope of a simple IG post. And there are exceptions, such as using a canvas lace-up figure-8 ankle brace for moderate-severity ankle sprains. Also, Using a brace for SUPPORT is a bit different than using a brace or sleeve to help PROTECT a joint from direct pressure or trauma. There are more than a few instances where this is highly beneficial given the typical patterns and impacts involved in certain sports. #sportsperformance #physicaltherapy #dontbelievethehype #sportsperformancetraining #injuryrecovery #injuryrehab
