For the hardy gardeners: the winter rose pruning is still on for tomorrow, January 30 (10 to 3). But an additional pruning event is scheduled for Saturday, February 20. (10 to 3)

PATHS AND TREES: Paths connecting the different parts of the park are also being installed. These paths should make the park more accessible to everyone-- people with walkers, families with strollers, and folks who don’t want to walk through wet grass when it rains. Special attention has been given make sure there would be no damage to the trees; some are quite old. The work was paused one day last week. City engineers, the City forester, the contractors, representatives fr...om MANA and Bethlehem Backyards for Wildlife as well as the landscape architect Chris Brown walked the proposed paths together to make any needed changes and ensure that (1) no trees or tree roots would be damaged during construction, (2) the integrity and the design of the paths would be maintained, and (3) some existing city resources could be made available so that the contractors would not incur burdensome, additional expenses where the design has had to be tweaked. PARK UPGRADES: GETTING READY FOR SPRING The first stage of work has begun. In keeping with a landscape plan done by Brown Design Corp, the old and failing blacktop has been removed from the Band Shell Seating Area. This area will be divided into 3 spaces: a newly surfaced seating area directly in front of the band shell, a picnic grove for concert goers, and handicapped parking spaces for 3 cars. The park will finally be handicap accessible! Amenities include: An environme...ntally friendly, permeable surface is being installed the new seating area A short vehicle-ready entrance off 8th Ave has been made through the historic, stone gates --opposite North Street and connecting to the new handicapped parking area. Unfortunately, four trees were taken down in this area; three were badly diseased and the fourth was already dead. Replacements are planned. A picnic grove with three shade trees and picnic tables is being installed in between the new handicapped parking area and the band shell seating area. Community input indicated that many concert goers have said they want to be able to picnic; this will be the perfect place for those who don’t want to sit and picnic on the grass. Join in! We're prepping the roses for the new spring garden. Rose Society members will be on hand to show newbies how to care for roses. Bring your own clippers, alcohol wipes to sanitize clippers between use, and a trash bag for clippings. Should be fun!
