This morning at 9:55am The Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a chimney fire at 861 Smithtown Ave. Assistant Chief Thompson arrived first on scene and fo...und the occupant just inside the rear of the home and assisted him out. He then notified dispatch to reactivate for a working fire after observing the ceiling on fire in the first floor. Assistant Chief O’Shaughnessy made entry to better locate the seat of the fire and Chief Iwanejko arrived and assumed command. The crew of engine 1 arrived and stretched a hose line through the rear door and began to knock the fire down, however after the fire spread into the second floor the crew was pulled out and an exterior attack was put in place to knock down the large volume of fire. Once the fire was knocked down crews were put back inside to extinguish hot spots. Bohemia responded with Engine 1, Truck 6, Truck 4 and Fire police 9 and 19. Mutual aid was provided by West Sayville Fire Department, Sayville Fire Department, Holbrook Fire Department and Lakeland Fire Department. Community Ambulance Company provided Firefighter rehab and stood by in case of any injuries, fortunately none were reported. All units were back in service by 12:42pm and the American Red Cross was assisting the residents. See more
