Teachers are not just educators, they are super heros. They do it all. Have you thanked a teacher lately? Happy Teacher Appreciation Week.

Bright Light Academy is closed as per Governor Wolf's stay-at-home order. We will re-open when the order is lifted. We hope you will all stay home, stay safe & stay healthy so that we can get back to teaching as soon as possible.

Self-soothing. What is it? It is the ability for someone (your child) to calm themselves, regulate their emotions & find comfort without being held. Why is it important? As children grow, developing age appropriate social-emotional skills is an important key to their managing in a classroom setting, whether in daycare, preschool or elementary school, children that can self-soothe are more able to manage their behaviors & transitions easier. How do we encourage self-soothi...ng? For older children who have a decent grasp of both receptive & expressive language we encourage them to use their words, to explain what they are upset or frustrated about so we can address their concerns effectively. We may offer a variety of different approaches or techniques for future use. For younger children, who may not have significant expressive language abilities or vocabulary, we help build that vocabulary by labeling feelings, offering suggestions that may make them feel better, letting them know that they are safe & we care about them & want to help them & again, making a few suggestions for alternate behaviors. For our littlest friends, it means patting their back, talking to them in soothing tones, holding their hand, sitting next to them to reassure them they are not alone. While they may not have language skills that we understand yet, we still label feelings & let them know that they are safe & cared for rathering than picking a baby/child up the minute they cry, these approaches help them develop appropriate social-emotional skills. Whatever age your child may be, helping them navigate their emotions & discovering ways to help them manage difficult feelings goes a long way both in the classroom & in the real world. One thing to keep in mind, AN ESCALATED ADULT CAN NEVER DE-ESCALATE A CHILD! Take a few breaths, count to 10, give yourself a moment to approach your child with love & understanding rather than frustration. See more

Our school-age students are encouraged to demonstrate kindness everyday as part of our BEE KIND CLUB. We are so proud of our children for making a difference every day. #bethechange

Embrace the chaos, encourage the curiosity. That's what we need to change the world.

And turn off the electronics!

This is quite accurate. Multiply your child times anywhere between 4 and 10 and that's what our teachers deal with everyday. With a smile on their face and often little thanks from those they serve. Early learning teachers are THE BEST!
