While doing some reading on the tarot this past weekend, I came across the word Benediction as one of the defining words for the Hierophant. Somehow in all the patriarchal trappings of the traditional image, I had ignored that little piece. The Anonymous writer of Meditations on the Tarot says to begin by ignoring everything in the drawing but the gesture of the right hand. I find this really satisfying. The Hierophant / Ancestor card in your reading takes on the sense tha...t you are involved in passing on blessing to others. This is a powerful and sacred task, to help facilitate and mediate people's connection with the Earth, with the Divine. To bless and draw people toward their truest selves. It doesn't re-define the concept of the Hierophant as teacher of the tradition, as one who stands in the stream of a tradition and passes it on. But it reminds me of the best teachers I have had, people who gave me the fire for the discipline we were studying. Share the fire! Tomorrow is March Forth Day! Planting season has begun, which means that its only a matter of weeks until the farm begins to come alive. I will continue to read on Tuesdays at Radiance through the end of April. Oh, blessed thaw! It is time to throw off the blanket of snow, step again onto grass and earth and feel the warm sun again on my skin.
