Halloween can be scary if children are unprepared. The same can be said about the water! That’s why we use fun, gentle and child-friendly teaching methods to make learning to swim fun, NOT scary. Our lessons incorporate educational playtime because when children are having fun, they’re more likely to retain the skills being taught. Playtime is supervised and structured, and the children are still learning skills such as independence, swimming techniques, and socialization wit...h others. We want to wish our instructor Lauren all the best as she moves to South Carolina for a new position in her field. Lauren has been with BSS Lancaster for over 3 years and has been an amazing team member. We will miss her smiling face and positive attitude, but wish her nothing but the best as she starts her new career. Thank you, Lauren!

British Swim School is turning 40 this week! Yes, that's right. 40 years ago, Rita Goldberg - our founder and the mastermind behind our award-winning teaching method - gave her very first swim lesson in this pool at her Victorian house in Manchester, UK. A former national swimmer for England, she's the reason we're called British Swim School! Fast-forward to this week, the little swim school she founded is scheduled to work with over 10,000 students every week - Rita’s ripple... has become a survival tidal wave! Obviously, we couldn’t let this milestone go without remark, so we caught up with Rita earlier in the week, to see how she was felt about it all, she said: I never dreamed how much our opening in 1981 would change my life, let alone so many other peoples’! Since that first week in March, I believe we’ve revolutionised the way very young children can be taught survival skills, and I can only imagine how many little lives we may have saved over the years since. Everyone has made such a tremendous contribution let’s all keep going; there’s still so many little ones to help.

Children aren’t able to receive the feedback necessary to ensure water safety and skill progression through online learning resources. This feedback is critical in ensuring the proper skills are being taught and retained. Should all other safety precautions fail, water safety and survival skills can save a child’s life if they ever find themselves in the water unexpectedly!

British Swim School classes will be continuing in Lancaster! Our goal is to make a significant impact in preventing drownings in our area. We believe that learning to swim is a life-or-death skill, essential for every child. We will continue our efforts to make sure our classes are safe by performing temperature checks, disinfecting all equipment after it is used, wearing masks and face shields, maintaining our reduced class sizes and keeping everyone six feet apart on our... pool deck. https://www.usswimschools.org//learning-to-swim-is-essent/

The state of California just made official what we've known all along: that swim instruction is essential! From the guidelines: "Drowning prevention class...es, including swim lessons with certified instructors, are permitted in indoor and outdoor swimming pools in all tiers, as they are deemed essential." A huge thank you to those in our industry who have worked tirelessly to make this happen, and we hope that other states will soon follow!

Did you know that pumpkins float? We want your children to float, too! Our program begins by teaching children basic survival techniques like floating on their back. Many drownings occur when children are not expected to be swimming - that’s where floating comes in, as it allows children to roll onto their back and rest at the water’s surface. While floating, children can breathe without obstruction or difficulty, yell out for help if they are unable to swim to safety, or rest until they’re able to propel themselves to the edge of the pool! Start learning life saving survival techniques today at BritishSwimSchool.com!

A common MISCONCEPTION exists about swimming in the fall and winter months: being in the water will increase someone’s chances of getting sick. The truth is, especially when the water is slightly chilly, swimming increases your white blood cell count so that your body further activates its health defenses. Simply put: taking year-round swim lessons helps to prepare your child’s immune system for reacting to germs and other changing conditions. British Swim School understands ...that immunity and health are critical priorities given the concerns presented by COVID-19. We’re committed to providing a clean environment that enables our critical mission of water safety for students of all ages and abilities while addressing these health and safety concerns regarding the virus. Visit BritishSwimSchool.com to find the British Swim School location nearest you, or contact us at 717-945-6114 to learn more about our year-round swim programs!

Remaining in swim lessons year-round allows children to practice water safety and swim skills on a routine basis. And with less swimming instruction available this summer, more time and experience in the water allows children to build on the skills they've already established while also improving health, confidence, and personal development. Watch this short video to learn more about the benefits of swimming year-round!
