Good morning! We’re looking forward to seeing you this week at the historic Broad Street Market. Fisher’s Deli and Bakery in the Brick Building features a different milkshake each month of the year. Until the end of December, Fisher’s is in the holiday spirit with a peppermint shake made with whole milk, vanilla ice cream, crushed candy canes and topped with whipped cream. Marko Hanna moved here eleven years ago from his native Egypt to join his sister in Central Pennsylvania. He began working as a forklift operator, but about five years ago, Marko started working in restaurants where he learned to cook different things quickly for a lot of people. Marko opened Shawarma and Falafel in the Brick Building of the historic Broad Street Market where he is supported by his wife and daughters. They are serving the food that they eat at homegrilled me...ats, grilled pita bread, fresh and colorful salads. In the mornings, Marko is serving traditional American breakfasts of sausage, bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast. The rest of the day, however, is all about Middle Eastern street food including gyros filled with marinated and slow-cooked lamb, falafel and shawarmas with your choice of meat. It’s only been six weeks since Marko opened up in the Broad Street Market, but so far he’s really happy to be here. He’s enjoying getting to know his customers who appreciate great food and come from diverse backgrounds. He is grateful to the staff of the Market who do a fantastic job at keeping it clean. He appreciates his fellow vendors who have been extremely supportive of him. Marko has also loved trying the variety of different foods at the Market including great barbecue, deli sandwiches, fried chicken, Mexican specialties and fried fish. Specializing in Middle Eastern food, Shawarma and Falafel was opened this fall by Marko Hanna in the Brick Building of the historic Broad Street Market. Shawarma and Falafel’s menu includes everything from breakfast to dessert. In the mornings, Marko is cooking American breakfasts including bacon, eggs, sausage and potatoes on the grill. After breakfast, it’s all about Middle Eastern street food. Two vertical rotisseries are set up at Shawarma and Falafel cooking marinated l...amb, beef or chicken that will go into their shawarmas and gyros. This slow-roasted meat is used to fill grilled pita bread along with hummus, tahini, sautéed vegetables and feta for the stand’s namesake shawarmas. Gyros filled with lamb are available wrapped in a grilled pita, with fries on the side, or as a platter with salad. Shawarma and Falafel’s menu also includes paninisgrilled sandwiches filled with spicy chicken, corned beef or turkey, ham and bacon. There are options on Marko’s menu for vegetarians including salads and falafel. In fact, Marko makes two different types of falafelclassic and eggplant served with a tahini sauce. Jennie, the oldest of six kids, grew up near Italian Lake in Harrisburg. After graduating from Bishop McDevitt, Jennie studied philosophy and economics at Fordham University in the Bronx where she met her future husband, Terry, but also developed an enthusiasm for great food. After graduation, Jennie worked in bars and restaurants in Philadelphia and New York and Terry also worked in the hospitality industry, providing consulting services to small businesses. After ten years ...of living in New York, Terry, originally from Staten Island, wanted to move Harrisburg where they would work towards opening their own restaurant. They decided to open a pizzeria since pizza is affordable, shareable and brings people together. Jennie and Terry believe the Broad Street Market is the best test kitchen available. Market customers are not shy about saying what they think and Jennie and Terry find the feedback extremely helpful. Jennie said that starting Knead in the Broad Street Market is the best job she’s ever had and she smiles from ear to ear when she’s there. She loves that the Market has created a space with no barriers for people from all walks of life to be together and that it is a true cornerstone of the community.
