Members are at the firehouse now prepping all of our trucks for the inclement weather. We do this so we can get to you more efficiently should we need to respond to a call.

Last evening 08/22 just after 1900 hours station 72 was alerted to assist Cumru Township Fire with a reported structure fire. Tanker 72 made the response and supplied water to units for primary fire attack. Rescue Engine 72 made the response as part of the second alarm and set up a fill site at Old Lancaster Pike/Goose Lane. Crews operated on location for a little over 2 hours before going available. We had a total of 8 members to respond to the fire scene. We also had 3 members standing by at station to cover the Township while crews operated at the fire.
As the Brecknock volunteers were conducting their semi-annual live fire drill, Rescue/Engine 72 was dispatched at 1028hrs to the 1000BLK of Alleghenyville Road for a Rescue. 5 volunteers, who were not actively involved in the 3rd live fire drill of the day, responded with Rescue/Engine 72 from the Berks County Fire Training Center. Berks radio advised Rescue/Engine 72 that a male was trapped under a tractor but they were unable to ascertain the size of the tractor. A 2nd 911 ...caller was now reporting this to be a large farm tractor. Captain 72 (Ja. Lutz) requested a 2nd rescue truck to assist which brought Rescue/Engine 42 (Cumru) to the scene. Rescue/Engine 72 and Captain 72 arrived on the scene to find a farm tractor overturned with the sole male operator (61 year old male) trapped under it and Southern Berks EMS already on location with pt. care started. The male was pinned by the steering wheel and was unable to extricate himself. The male was conscious and alert but was complaining of severe respiratory distress. Rescue/Engine 72 deployed the rescue struts to keep the tractor from moving and further pinning the male underneath. As the struts were being put into place, other firefighters began to build a wooden box crib under the rear of the tractor. Rescue/Engine 42 arrived and assisted with the building of the box crib. A hydraulic spreader was placed between the box crib and the rear hitch of the tractor. As lifting began, the rear hitch on the tractor began to bend. That operation was quickly stopped and the hydraulic spreader was replaced with high pressure lifting bags. As the bags were being installed, a hydraulic cutter was used to cut the steering wheel in an attempt to give the male pt. some relief. As the steering wheel was removed, it was now noted that enough space was created with the removal of the steering wheel. The pt. was extricated onto an awaiting Southern Berks EMS long spine board. Extrication took approximately 27 minutes. The pt. was the loaded into the ambulance and transported to the local trauma center (Reading Hospital). Rescue/Engine 42 was released from the scene after securing their equipment. Rescue/Engine 72 remained on the scene until the tractor was uprighted. All 72 units were placed available at 1215hrs. Crews had a training burn earlier this morning. Thank you to Western Berks Fire Department and Kenhorst Volunteer Fire Company 69 for joining us!
At 0845hrs, the Brecknock Volunteers were dispatched for a controlled burn that was possibly out of control in the 800Blk of Maple Grove Road. Asst. 72 (Schlouch) arrived on the scene with Brush 72 to find a 100'x200' pile of timbers stacked 25' in the air. The pile was roughly 25% involved. The timbers were being disposed of by a local demolition crew after Sunoco Pipeline was finished with them as they installed the new pipeline. Brush 72 and Tanker 72 began suppression ope...rations but quickly discovered ALOT more water was going to be needed. Asst. 72 had Cumru Fire dispatched for an Engine, Tanker and Tower. Upon the arrival of E42-1, they set up a draft from the nearby pond and supplied Tower 42 with water to extinguish the fire. The demolition crew on location had a Tracked Loader and assisted with pulling the pile of timbers apart. Approximately 150,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire. All Brecknock and Cumru volunteers cleared the scene at 1430hrs. See more
The Brecknock Township Fire Company has the privilege to announce the awarding of a Federal Emergency Management Assistance to Firefighters Grant. The award, in conjunction with Adamstown Fire Company, was awarded in the amount of $40,841.00. This awarded money will be split with Adamstown Fire Company to purchase double jacketed 5" hose. We were also awarded the same grant in 2019 through FEMA in the amount of $36,645 to switch Engine 72 over to double jacketed 5" as well as... outfit the remaining apparatus with both 2 " and 3" hose. With this 2nd grant in as many years, all of Brecknock Township Fire Company front line suppression apparatus will have double jacketed 5" supply hose (over 3,000 total feet) as well as new 2 " and 3" hose. Without the awarding of this grant it would have taken many years to compile roughly $55,000 to purchase all of this hose.
The Brecknock Township Fire Company is proud to announce the awarding of a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) grant in the amount of $3,000.00 on 7/15/2020. This DCNR grant is a 50/50 cost sharing grant so another $3,000.00 will be contributed by the Fire Company. This grant will allow our forestry division to add over 2,000 feet of lightweight hose (both 1" and 1 " single jacket hose) specially designed for fighting wildland and brush fires. This will also facilitate the purchase of multiple forestry hose adapters specifically designed to work in conjunction with this hose as well as a larger 32" chainsaw to add to the inventory of 14" and 18" chainsaws. We would like to thank DCNR for sponsoring this grant as well as awarding this grants to us.
