Students from Prof. Ellen Chamberlin’s Evolution of the Earth course picking out personalized sets of gear for their field trip to Nippenose Valley this week. They will be observing and interpreting the geology to learn what central Pennsylvania was like, 450 million years ago!
Prof. Batbaatar performed a Trashcano demonstration for his Physical/Environmental Geology students this week, using liquid nitrogen and a water-filled trash can. Submersing a plastic bottle filled with liquid nitrogen initiates a gas-driven eruption, and the response is similar (but safer!) to what happens to volatiles dissolved in a magma during ascent the driving force behind most explosive eruptions. Hey, Bucknell Geology Alums: Memories of Mineralogy #17
Geology has left the building! Profs. Jigjidsurengiin Batbaatar (a.k.a. Bataa) and Rob Jacob are taking advantage of the sunny and 50-degree afternoon to move their Physical/Environmental Geology and Geophysics labs outside!
Congratulations to Prof. Ellen Chamberlin for being awarded the C. Graydon & Mary E. Rogers Faculty Fellowship! Grants from this fund are awarded to retain superior faculty by supporting their research, teaching, and professional academic development.
