Viewing an event through the lens of your emotions is one of the cognitive distortions. These are ways of thinking that cause problems for people. Our thoughts are not always logical or rational. Thoughts can't be controlled, but we can challenge thinking and also change focus from thinking. When you notice yourself using emotional reasoning in a situation, you are not going to be able to solve problems, or truly understand the situation for what it is. Take a step back, ground yourself, acknowledge that the situation is making you emotional, and then reassess it.
