There are times when tragedy befalls a member of our community and we must pull together to help those whom we are most right in calling family. After a tough year, there can be no more important time to support each other than now, when we received the heart-rending news that Rebecca Koltun, an alum of Poyntelle, JFK H.S. Class of 2017 in Plainview, and senior at Binghamton University, suffered a terrible injury when skiing two weeks ago. The challenges facing Rebecca from t...he resulting quadriplegia are catastrophic. Much like actor Christopher Reeve, Rebecca will require lots of help to work towards returning vibrancy to the life of an aspiring young woman. The paralysis and damage resulting from the accident will require extensive surgery and rehab care. Yesterday's attack on the US Capitol has left us jarred, deeply disturbed and shocked. While we are reminded too frequently of the hate and ignorance that exists in our country, seeing confederate flags, swastikas and other symbols of racism and terrorism - in places reserved for our nation's important decision-makers - is something that we will never be able to forgive or forget. We echo sentiments shared by Stacey Abrams: "While this terrible display of terror and meanness... shakes us, let’s remember: the Jewish son of an immigrant (Jon Ossoff) & the first Black Senator from Georgia (Raphael Warnock), will join a Catholic POTUS & the first woman, Black + Indian VP in our nation’s capital."
