BUCKS COUNTY BITS New Year's Day was on March 25th until 1752, when the Gregorian calendar was adopted. The day meant attending church & visiting with family & friends for punch & New Year's Cake. Eating pork symbolized moving forward. Mummers (meaning satire & mockery) strolled the streets begging "Here we stand before your door, As we stood the year before. Give us whiskey, give us gin, Open the door & let us in". In 1937 the Uptown String Band was formed in Penndel, Bucks County's only Mummers organization.
