We all know exercise is good for our mental health, but when we’re feeling down or depressed it’s hard to motivate ourselves to do anything extra, especially if means working up a sweat. When I ask clients if they exercise, they usually talk about gym memberships they’re not using or how little time they have to fit it in. Many of us have an all or nothing view of exercise, thinking that we need sweat it out at the gym for an hour or we haven’t done anything worthwhile. Th...is is defeatist thinking and sets us up to fail before we’re out of the gate. Exercise is really about moving and working it in to our daily routine as we do every other activity that is important to our health like eating, brushing our teeth, etc. We can work exercise into our lives in natural ways like walking the dog, playing with the kids, parking at the end of the lot when we shop and taking stairs instead of escalators. Planning to walk with a friend or meeting a friend at the gym makes us accountable to someone else and more likely to follow through. Start small, maybe a 5-minute walk at lunch time or a walk to your car at the very edge of the parking lot at work or the mall. Achieving small goals can provide big psychological benefits as well as physical ones. Making exercise part of your daily schedule can have a great cumulative effect on overall health and it’s FREE!
