The Central Bucks High School South Chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society hosted prominent historian Kenneth Davis, author of Don’t Know Much About History and numerous other works on American history this week. Introduced by Rho Kappa president Jane Macaulay and moderated by vice-president Rachel Leopold, Mr. Davis spoke to Rho Kappa members and social studies staff across the district about his recent projects and the challenging and exciting work of a historian, while answering a wide-range of student questions. Rho Kappa members were a great representation of the CB South community and were grateful to learn from Mr. Davis. #CBSDPROUD

Ms. Linda Raitt's 5th grade virtual academy class (including students from both Buckingham and Gayman elementary schools) took third place in the 2020 Rendell Citizenship Challenge, hosted by the Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement. The Honorable Judge Marjorie Rendell, former Governor Ed Rendell, and former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris judged the competition. Students wrote a paper and answered questions at the finals about whether or not the nation should eliminate the Electoral College system and replace it with the popular vote. Over 100 5th grade classes from across the commonwealth competed in this year's challenge, and the CBSD students competed among just 12 schools that earned a place in the finals from both the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh area. Ms. Raitt's class secured a prize of $500 towards civic education!

Take a journey around the world this winter break! On the Titus Elementary School website, families can print out a passport and a map for the journey and listen to videos created by Titus teachers about different holiday celebrations and traditions across the world. Fill out a passport, create a souvenir postcard, read more about each holiday, and complete a departure ticket at each stop! Start your tour at https://www.cbsd.org/Page/64265. Titus teachers collaborated with th...eir Home and School to bring H&S president Angela McGettigan's idea to life - a world "tour" where students learn about holiday celebrations in 14 different countries. "Originally the idea was just for the teachers to record slides about the holidays and then the kids could fill out a passport with what they have learned about each holiday," Jennifer Snyder, Titus sixth grade teacher, explained, "However, after reviewing all of the resources, I realized that there were so many other fun things the kids could do to extend their learning about each holiday!" #CBSDPROUD

As we communicated today, a fire occurred early this morning, October 25, 2020 at Central Bucks High School West. The fire was contained to one classroom; one adjacent room incurred water damage due to sprinkler deployment and significant smoke circulated throughout sections of the building. Thankfully, there were no injuries. A professional restoration firm is now onsite performing the necessary cleaning and ventilation. For the safety and well-being of students and staff, CB West will be closed the week of October 26-30 while this work is completed. During this time, all instruction, both synchronous and asynchronous, will be delivered in a 100% virtual mode following the bell schedule in place since October 1st.
