Fantastic team - by Mary Lou (Lou) T. Lost a filling and chipped a tooth. Was able to get in the next day due to a cancellation. Shelby took the x-rays, cleaned my teeth and Dr. Foster addressed my issues and set up a plan to get me smiling again. Kind, professional and excellent care. Wouldn’t go anywhere else! To say that it’s been a crazy week would be an understatement. The WHO released a statement that routine dental care should be postponed. The ADA rebutted an...d said that dental care is essential. A patient called to thank me for saving her life and catching her cancer. Yes. You read that right. On July 21st during a routine oral cancer screening during a routine exam on a healthy patient who was in for her routine care, I felt a swollen lymph node. I knew it wasn’t normal. I assured her we likely need not panic but we were not going to simply do nothing. I insisted she see her PCP and I even wrote down exactly what to say to them when she called. She did call. They saw her and did further testing. She called me this week because she was starting treatment for the cancer I caught and she wanted to thank me- for saving her life. I don’t say this to toot my own horn. I’m devastated it was cancer while simultaneously so glad the patient listened and that I didn’t ignore my instincts. I debated sharing this at all. But my inbox has been flooded with questions about whether or not to put off your regular dental check up because of one statement the WHO released. There have been zero cases that I am aware of (and I have scoured news reports) of a COVID super spreader in a dental setting. Dental offices were experts in this PPE game long before COVID made it cool! I could go into the plethora of articles about oral health and overall health. There are even studies coming out that those with poor oral health suffered more severe cases of COVID when contracted. But I won’t bore those who have made it this far in this post. Your routine dental care MATTERS. All of your routine medical care MATTERS. Your health care professionals are working hard to keep you safe and healthy in all medical settings. Please don’t put off your routine care during this time- the consequences could be catastrophic.
