Did you know your child's consumption of sports and energy drinks can "not only" cause various health problems, but these beverages can also cause irreversible damage to teeth. And sugar is only part of the reason high acidity levels in these drinks erode enamel, the outer layer of teeth. That's right. Parents and kids alike are surprised when they learn that by consuming sports and energy drinks, they’re essentially bathing their teeth in acid. Statistics show that as many... as 62% of teens in the U.S. consume at least one sports or energy drink every day. So it’s time that kids and parents begin to understand how these drinks impact dental health. Here are just three of those ways: Tooth enamel is irreversibly damaged Teeth become overly sensitive Teeth are more likely to form decay When teens and their parents come into our office with one or all of these symptoms, they often have no idea what has caused them, and are stunned to hear that the culprit might very well be the regular consumption of these types of drinks. So, what can a parent do to mitigate the damage? Minimizing your child’s intake of sports and energy drinks is a great place to start. However, this can be difficult with older children who have more freedom and control over their diets. So at the very least, make them aware of the dangers, and tell them to rinse their mouths with water and/or chew sugarless gum after consuming a sports or energy drink. This will increase saliva flow, which helps return acidity levels in the mouth to neutral. For more information, contact Chester County Dentistry for Children today! We're here to help keep your child's teeth and smile both healthy and happy.
