For the February 2021 Hero T-Shirt Club, we’re honoring the US Army’s 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters. Under the command of the French army, this infantry regiment fought in World War I during the allied counter-offensive in the Second Battle of the Marne and in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the second deadliest battle in American history. Comprised of mostly black Americans, the unit experienced racism and discrimination as one of the nation’s f...ew non-white army units. The unit was assigned to the French army for the duration of the war because many white American soldiers refused to fight alongside them. The 369th Infantry Regiment proved their worth on the battlefield, earning the French government’s Croix de Guerre, the highest award for bravery, along with another 170 individual medals for valor. The unit also spent 191 days on the battlefield in France, a longer span of time than any other US unit. The 369th Infantry band is also credited with introducing jazz music to France under the direction of James Reese Europe, where they frequently played to large crowds and were known for boosting morale amongst those who heard their music.
