Soulines Elgar DCX with Rega 880 tonearm and Monster Cable Alpha Genesis cartridge. Swell!

Garrard Zero 100 C with linear tracking tonearm early 70s. Ya know, it works. It's sort of a mixed bag overall as a turntable. Very quiet, which is strange considering how many moving parts there are. Idler wheel drive system, which is good. I can think of a number of improvements, but considering this was intended to be a big market breakthrough I think Garrard managed the whole thing well.

A better overall look at home TT rig. For the moment. 3" thick poplar base with Linn LP12 guts installed, Rabco SL-8e tonearm (battery powered btw,) Grado Longhorn cartridge (Van Alstine mod, shown a few days ago,) anti static brush grounded to Bill Lagos of Millersound's crazy copper shielded interconnect that he no longer makes .

Back in stock after Goldring dumped Music Hall who distributed them for what? 30 years? Anyway, if you are looking for a very serious MC cartridge that will take on most $3000 offerings, get this. Guaranteed to improve the Ear/Soul connection. $1500 Goldring Ethos. We have other Goldrings as well.

Ah, the classics... A "Vintage" Marantz receiver from the seventies. First of all, this receiver is manufactured in Japan. Saul Marantz sold the company by 1968, and the corporate HQ moved from NY State to Sun Valley Ca. Any Marantz that looks like this was made in Japan by Superscope. And Saul Marantz was busy founding Dahlquist with Roy Dahlquist by 1972. So what is "classic" about these receivers? Short version: Nothing. Long version: OK, they are almost all well made and ...sound good, if not great. A little TLC and they can be a nice addition to a mid fi system, especially the FM . But far too much time is spent on them in general. By extension, if Marantz is considered the classic of this kind of thing from the 70s, what about Technics, Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood, Sony Sansui, etc? As a general rule, the best sounding audio from these companies, their flagship pieces, are really nice. Chances are you've never seen them. The more typically available pieces are OK if absolutely perfect, which they almost never are. I'm other words, unless you're a collector or bored- don't bother. Which leads me to my final point- if you call us at CH Audio to ask if we'll repair a 1979 Pioneer receiver, I will spend the entire conversation trying to talk you out of doing it (for your own good,) and, no, we won't repair it. Time to move on. See more
