Yesterday and today were spent marking the graves of Civil War Veterans. 40 plus are buried at Chestnut Hill, likely more considering not all stones include references to veterans' contributions. Among these Civil War veterans is a survivor of the Battle of the Wilderness who returned to combat after being wounded. Chestnut Hill is also the final resting place of a military surgeon who was killed by guerillas at Harper's Ferry. The stories of these honored Civil War Veterans will be told this summer during a local Civil War tour. Details to follow.
Looking for any volunteers who would be willing to walk the cemetery on a Saturday or Sunday in order to mark the graves of Civil War veterans. We are pleased to announce that the cemetery will be part of the Mechanicsburg Civil War Commemoration next month and also featured on a Civil War tour in August.
Chestnut Hill Cemetery Association is grateful to Mr. Mike Woods, Cumberland Valley High School Agriculture Teacher and FFA Adviser, and to two of his students for volunteering their time to help us spruce up the entrance to the cemetery.
Looking forward to meeting with a local historian Friday afternoon to discuss Chestnut Hill's inclusion in the Mechanicsburg Civil War Commemoration.
