COVID UPDATE: Over the past week, PA has experienced a 34% increase in Covid cases. Some of the main venues of transmission are: in break rooms at work and at school in locker rooms on school buses... at parties at church These are all places, people have been found to not follow the recommendations made by health officials. In as much as the holidays are coming, one thing advised is that we do this year’s family gatherings differently. The primary suggestion is to NOT have gatherings in the first place. Celebrate with those who live in your household, and develop creative ways to spend the holidays with non-household family members, such as having a virtual gathering. Covid is still here, and it is deadly. As such, we each have a responsibility to do our part to keep ourselves and others safe. On our Sunday Morning Zoom services, we have a Health Update spot, where we are advised on the most recent COVID-19 statistics and recommendations. Please join us at 10AM for worship and our pandemic updates. Just log on to cfecgive.com, and click on the Zoom button. Our most recent update was about face masks. At the start of this pandemic, face masks were not part of any preventative measures. As time moved on, healthcare workers were instructed to wear cloth masks...lat...er surgical masks...and now in some facilities, N95 or KN95 masks. This update is to discuss the effectiveness of each type of mask/face covering. They are listed below from the least effective to the most effective: * Polyester/spandex neck gaiters stretchable scarves that can be pulled up over the mouth and nose: You may as well wear nothing. * Blue non-surgical/non-medical masks. Very little effectiveness, because they are not waterproof. * Cloth masks: These may be the only option available. However the material and craftsmanship of the cloth mask determines how effective it is. The recommendation is that cloth masks should be made of a double layer, tightly-knit material. But please note that a cloth mask should be used as a last resort when surgical masks and respirators are not available. * Blue surgical/medical masks: They are waterproof and will protect both you and others. * N95 or KN95 respirator masks are the standard masks for use in health-care. They are designed to protect the wearer by filtering out 95% of airborne particles, as well as protect others if the wearer is infected. You can purchase these yourself, however, supply can be an issue. NOTE OF CAUTION: An N95 respirator with an exhalation valve is NOT the same as a valveless N95! The valve is a 1-way filter and only protects the wearer and no one else!
