New tool on the mold bench! This one cavity mold's most interesting feature is its cooling system. An additional water plate was added and a network of water cavities run under the part cavity in the picture. The core pins also have a way for water to run through them. The copper looking center piece is made out of an alloy called MoldMAX HH. It's ideal for conducting heat away from the part using the water network within. Very cool! :) #plasticinjectionmolding

Ever wonder how we create intricate details in solid steel? Our standard metal drilling process with a CNC machine (computer numerical control) doesn't have the reach that's required, so we use what’s commonly referred to as an EDM or, electrical discharge machine. An EDM uses electricity to remove metal from a part and it is PRECISE. Notice in the pictures the shiny block of steel with all of its detailed veins and deep pockets. The darker block is a graphite electrode which was created to machine the area where the future plastic part will be created. Both electrode and steel block were immersed in a dielectric fluid and then repeatedly treated with electrical discharges to fashion the tooled piece you see now.

Congratulations to Cyrus Gage as he progresses to the Tool Shop Apprenticeship program! He completed his 1,000 hours to qualify for the program and now he'll log 7,000 more hours to complete the program. The entire program takes four years and he'll be certified as a Journeyman Tool Maker upon completion. The Apprenticeship program is run in conjunction with the Northwestern PA Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association (NTMA) and is a combined web-based curriculum and hands-on job experience. Tool shop update: New Mold! A single cavity medical mold just finished its form, fit, and function assessment. Getting ready for a Bluing Review before it heads to the press. A neat function of this mold is the sliding core that runs off a hydraulic cylinder. #plasticinjectionmolding #meadvillepa

Congratulations to Joe Mick on his recent promotion to Process Technician! Joe worked at C&J through college and just came back to us a little over a year ago. When I started up here again, it felt like I had come home. Joe’s new position, 3rd shift Process Technician, has one main goal: make sure that every press is running at optimal performance so the Operators can do their jobs smoothly.
