Clara Barton House and Gardens just received some great news.
Very excited to just pickup this hand written letter from Clara Barton during the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Excellent Clara Barton autograph letter signed, written ...from Johnstown, Pennsylvania on 21 August 1889 after the Johnstown Flood of 1889. Without a clear mission after the Civil War, Barton finally gained recognition of the American Red Cross in the early 1880s as a relief agency, but it wasn't until the Johnstown Flood that the organization was tested and seen as important in providing relief during disasters. On American National Red Cross stationery, Barton writes to a Lillie Sanger, ''Acknowledging the receipt of your kind note of the 20th, I must confess that we are still here, although it really must seem that [to] all the world that enough had been done for Johnstown. And yet we are in the midst of our heaviest work, viz., building houses and furnishing homes all over the town. Over a hundred families a day are provided with mattresses, bedsteads, extension [?], blankets, pillows, chairs, cooking utensils, and such clothing as needed. Taken to their houses by our five and six teams constantly running from morning till night. You will see by this that nothing comes amiss. The people will need bedding here from now till next spring. / Yours sincerely / Clara Barton''. See more
Interior update as of 8/20/20.
Exterior improvements at the Ludwig home as of 8/20/20.
Dear friends & Johnstowners. The Ludwig House renovation is underway. I invite you to drive by and see the daily progress. Next week our board will meet to disc...uss the reuse plan. My idea is listed below Cafe Clara. I would appreciate any feedback, and any good ideas for the house. Whatever it’s going to be, it needs to make money to sustain itself, The house can’t rely on grants. Café Clara Johnstown’s Most Beautiful Eatery Specializing in Modern American cuisine, Café Clara at the Ludwig prepares unique, locally-sourced, seasonal fare served in a lush garden environment. Picture being greeted on a finely detailed 1880’s Queen Ann porch, styled in old Charleston, South Caroline comfort and charm. The porch will have a natural flow into a spectacular garden café. A large treehouse/stage will be situated in the center for outdoor performances. A shipping container bar will serve up delicious Mint juleps for evening cocktails, and corporate events. Located on the upper floors is the Ludwig House Airbnb. (3) Uniquely individual shabby chic rooms, that tells a different story about previous residents. Café Clara will raise the bar in Johnstown, bringing picturesque outdoors dining, with first class service.
I will be working at the Ludwig House/Clara Barton House starting this Wednesday. I’m looking to get quotes on replacing the roof, also need a quote for some Ma...sonary work at the house. Must be licensed and insured. I realize this project has taken longer than anticipated to get started, but the good news is we are underway. There’s a great group of people working behind the scenes to get this project done.
This week the Johnstown City Council voted to forgive back taxes owed on the Ludwig House, 662 Main St., which was used by Clara Barton in the aftermath of the 1889 flood. The move makes it possible for the Clara Barton House and Gardens Inc to continue its work in preserving the site! In honor of the occasion, we're pleased to share the original, restored renderings of the house, which we first made available to JAHA members a few weeks ago. Visit the post to see the restored version of the renderings!
Thank you Rigby family for this cool donation.
Clara Barton House Preservation and Reuse Plan History of House John Ludwig, a German immigrant liquor wholesaler, built his brick Queen Anne style residence at 662 Main Street in 1883. The Ludwig House is located at the edge of downtown Johnstown, and because of its higher location the residence only received about 7 inches of water on the first floor (top of the base boards) during the 1889 Johnstown Flood. On the day following the Flood, John and Catherine Ludwig threw op...Continue reading
As we near the end of March we want to recognize that it is Red Cross Month. Since the early years of DAR, we have a had a relationship with our neighbor in Wa...shington, DC and fellow volunteer service organization, the American Red Cross. Clara Barton was both a founder of the American Red Cross and an early member of the DAR. Barton held the first meeting of the American Red Cross in her Washington, DC apartment on May 21, 1881. She served as President of the American Red Cross from 1881 until 1904. Clara Barton served as DAR’s first Surgeon General from 1890 until 1893 and attended the first Continental Congress in 1892. View these photos to learn more about Clara Barton. Approximately 112,000 DAR members volunteered over 26 million hours for the Red Cross during World War II and offered financial support to the organization, for example supporting the Red Cross Blood Donor Project by helping to purchase ambulances, trucks, and mobile canteens. The DAR continues their support of the American Red Cross today with members across the country volunteering with Red Cross in times of need. The Red Cross is currently facing a severe shortage of blood donations because they have had to cancel thousands of blood drives during the Coronavirus pandemic. They are working to host blood drives that are safe for people to participate in while social distancing such as this one in Baltimore, MD https://foxbaltimore.com//blood-drives-happening-at-a-safe. They are urging eligible and healthy donors to make an appointment if they are able to donate blood - please go to www.redcrossblood.org for more information on how to make an appointment and their Coronavirus safety protocols.
Thank you Second Lady of Pennsylvania, Gisele Fetterman for stopping by the Clara Barton house today.
