How do we treat century-old surfaces and upholsteries, restore missing structural and decorative elements, or manage deteriorating plastic furniture like the Sacco Beanbag chair? Collab members are invited to this exclusive virtual peek into the world of furniture conservation at the museum. With a focus on modern and contemporary design objects, @philamuseum conservators will offer an insider’s glimpse into how they examine, research, and protect the collection, with a livestream look at their lab. COLLECTING DESIGN | Casablanca Sideboard, 1981. Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007). Design Since 1945," an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1983, was the first major design show since the classic Design for the Machine in 1932, a half-century earlier. It coincided with the formation of Memphis, the Italian design collective whose post-modern aesthetic would influence designers across the globe. This sideboard, with its marginally functional angled shelves and patte...rned surface, became a symbol of the movement. The exhibition catalogue for Design Since 1945 is a modernist's dream. COLLECTING DESIGN: Poster for Simplicissimus, 1897. Thomas Theodor Heine (1867-1948). Donated by members of Collab in 1988, this was the first poster added to the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Design Collection. Published from 1896 to 1964 (with a hiatus from 1944-54), Simplicissimus, a satirical German weekly cofounded, edited and illustrated by Heine, initially featured politically daring work by Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hermann Hesse and others. The bulldog in this ...poster has broken its chain and growls ferociously a visual representation of the magazine’s biting satire. In WWI it softened its tone; in WWII, Heine, being Jewish, was forced into exile. . . . . . . . #simplicissimus #posterdesign #germandesign #thomastheodorheine #collabpma #collectingdesign @philamuseum See more

Dear Collabers, Ingo Maurer, one of our Design Excellence Award Honorees has passed on at the age of 87. A German industrial designer who specialized in the design of the most inventive whimsical lighting and installations was our honoree in 2002. His installation of Porca Miseria! exhibited in the French Period Room in the Main Building, remains, in my mind one of the most memorable. I recall his lecture at the old Van Pelt, and how he mesmerized the audience with his work a...nd his charm, followed by a fabulous party at Bahdeebahdu (studio of lighting sculptor Warren Muller) on Cherry Street. As I reflect on the past 32 years of honorees, I am moved by the fact that we have had the honor of being in the presence of such geniuses and will continue, through our work, to be in the company of the next generation of greats. --Eileen Tognini, Collab Chair
