Your computer leaves trails everywhere on sites that use Google Analytics, Google Maps or YouTubevideos.... The variant with photos and you check which of the photos have a certain trait is different; here they provide pictures that computers have failed recognizing and you are provided with the question: "Check all photos that contain water". Your answer to this question might be compared to another humans answer to the same question. If both of you check the same photos, you are allowed access. At the same time, your input is used to train an artificial intelligence to become better at recognizing water. The variant with almost unreadable text was used to scan vast amount of books where the optical character recognition algorithms were unable to understand the content. By answering those captchas, you have assisted Google in indexing old books. Of course, also in this case your answers were compared with those of another human. They also show two words, one of which they know, and the other is not known by the captcha engine. Only the one word is actually used for checking id you are human, while the other word is your "contribution" to their book scanning.
