We've had exciting space news the past week, with the successful landing of Mars rover Perseverance. Do you know about Clyde Tombaugh? This month marks 91 years since the young astronomer and former Kansas farm boy discovered Pluto in 1930. He died in January 1997, and in homage to his discovery, his cremated remains were placed aboard the New Horizons spacecraft in 2006 on a 9-year, 3-billion-mile journey to Pluto, which it swept past in 2015, revealing a complex world with... mountains and weather, and with a large, young, heart-shaped region of ice on its surface. New Horizons is now more than 4 billion miles away from Earth, making this the longest post-mortem flight ever recorded. Among the fastest machines ever created by humans, it still travels on, and we wait for further discoveries of worlds beyond our comprehension. "What Tombaugh didn’t know then was that Planet X would launch the era of exploration in the third zone of the solar system. Science builds on science, and this discovery helped pave the way for New Horizons’ exploration of this uncharted region," Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in 2020. https://earthsky.org//this-date-in-science-clyde-tombaugh-

"Seventy-five years is all I want to live. I want to celebrate my life while I am still in my prime. My daughters and dear friends will continue to try to convince me that I am wrong and can live a valuable life much longer."
