As part of our growing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Program, faculty & staff are receiving more professional development and training in DEI. Yesterday's training was about "Unconscious Bias," presented by Mr. John Clayton, Director of Diversity, Inclusion & Workforce Initiatives at Independence Blue Cross. The Cristo Rey team learned about what unconscious bias is, what causes it and what we can do to change it. Thank you John and the Independence Blue Cross team for sharing your knowledge and insights with our faculty & staff and leading a great discussion!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT with Isaiah Gabriel 1. What college did/do you attend? >> Undergraduate: Villanova University >> Graduate: Temple University... 2. What was/is your major? >> Villanova: BA in Global Interdisciplinary Studies - Africana Studies >> Temple: MPH in Epidemiology 3. What is one goal or aspiration you have in life? >> I want to use my degree in epidemiology as a stepping stone towards changing health disparities that exist in sub-Saharan Africa, African-Americans with the United States, and other communities abroad that may be facing similar issues. 4. What was one thing that you learned at Cristo Rey that you still use today? >> The skills used to network and how to utilize your network for advice and guidance is something that always sticks with me. A lot of my opportunities have been furthered or improved through networking. When I went to Botswana, the people within my network provided me with a ton of advice and resources that made the experience more feasible and enjoyable. 5. Any Advice to current Cristo Rey students? >> Use college or whatever your next steps are after high school as an opportunity to learn more about yourself. Every class, classmate, teacher, and/or event is a chance to learn more about the world and your place within it. In the journey, stay true to yourself and where you came from
Cristo Rey Philadelphia is excited to introduce Mr. Denis Okema as our Inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Mr. Okema has been an invaluable member to the Cristo Rey team for the last five years, serving as our faculty for Business Literacy and a corporate relations manager in the Work-Study Program. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this important new role, having spent eight years in international development, working primarily on con...flict mitigation and resolution, peacebuilding, HIV/AIDS prevention, and wellness programs. He has a Bachelor's degree in Development Studies from Makerere University, Masters of Science in Administration of Human Services from Chestnut Hill College, Master Certificate in Applied Project Management from Villanova University, a Certification in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership through the National Coalition Building Institute, and a Professional Certification in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Mr. Okema is passionate about DEI work and believes in the Cristo Rey mission. There is no better candidate to lead and strengthen our commitment to creating an inclusive working and learning environment where all students, families, faculty and staff feel welcomed and respected. I believe that equal opportunity for quality education is a direct equitable action towards leveling the playing field for everyone and unlocking the full potential of our students. A diverse and inclusive school environment adds value to our mission to nurture and challenge young women and men to recognize and realize their full potential as they grow to love God, respect others, and serve their community. - Mr. Okema
