A homeowner who fails to pay real estate taxes may lose the property to a sheriff’s tax sale auction. But Philadelphia properties can be redeemed within 9 months if the property is is not vacant as defined by the law. In order to redeem, the original owner must pay the redemption amount which is the winning bid plus 10%. Purchasers of tax sale properties should not invest in improvements until after the redemption period. The original owner may not be required to compensate the winning bidder for improvements when the redemption amount is paid. #realestate #philadelphia #sheriffsale #rightofredemption
