I’ve been seeing this ad all over the place. It’s offensive on so many levels I hardly know where to start. Annoying = older women = fat women = insect = infestation = annoying, nagging, whining, complaining. And did I say fat? Sheesh. Will we ever get to a point where this is not socially acceptable. How is this supposed to sell insurance? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uZ7PG3YPuM&feature=share

Hi folks! I am giving a webinar on Tuesday, 9/15 with the Center for Mindful Eating along with author Jenna Hollenstein who wrote a great book on Buddhism and intuitive eating, called Eat to Love. If you think you understand the link between dietary restriction and health, think again. Or tune in. Here are the deets: https://www.thecenterformindfuleating.org/event-3937476

I am excited to be offering this webinar with author, dietician, and mindfulness teacher Jenna Hollenstein and the Center for Mindful Eating. We will talk about the ways that food restriction for health reasons (aka "wellness diets" or "healing diets") can do more harm than good, especially for people already dealing with chronic pain and illness. We will talk about the mind-body connection with food; intuitive eating; orthorexia; why weight loss doesn't work; and how you can... be healthy at ANY size. I will share my story of trying to heal chronic pain with food elimination (spoiler alert, it didn't work) and some stories from clients I have worked with over the years. There will be a lot of time for Q & A at the end as well. CEU credits available for dieticians and nutritionists. September 15, 2020, 12:00 - 1:30 Eastern time (US)

I think I will just keep posting articles like this until this shit stops. How is this ok with anyone? Why don’t we include fat people when we talk about structural oppression? https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5f36e1b4c5b69fa9e2fb53a9

This is an essential reminder that fatness has yet to be included in what most people call social justice. https://www.buzzfeed.com/lo/it-gets-better-unless-youre-fat

I am so excited to be presenting this webinar with Jenna Hollenstein for the Center for Mindful Eating. We will be talking about what can happen when food restriction or elimination is recommended to heal from pain or illness. With some special exceptions (like Celiac disease or childhood epilepsy), there is actually very little hard evidence to support the idea that dietary change can impact physical symptoms. Your BELIEFS about what you eat can certainly affect how you feel... (the placebo or nocebo effect), so being told that a food is "bad" for you can have negative consequences. We also know that that dietary restriction is stressful, and that stress exacerbates illness. And, for the overwhelming majority of people, restriction is not sustainable. It often leads to binging on forbidden foods, which then creates a cycle and shame and guilt. That's the last thing a person needs when ill or in pain. Learn how intuitive eating can be a more wholesome and empowering alternative to following a restrictive diet and how mindfulness can support intuitive eating. Canada releases landmark medical guidelines for "weight management," developed over three and a half years by a committee of 62 medical professionals. The guidelines: 1) argue for addressing the discrimination and stigma people living with obesity face when trying to access medical care as a critical starting point. ... 2) Recognize that "the common medical advice to eat less and exercise more doesn’t really help most patients. diets don't work. The lead author states: "Whenever people decrease their calories, they activate a bunch of hormones and neurochemicals within their brain, within their gut, that drive the weight to come back on. So we’re failing people all the time when we say go on a diet so they can lose a little bit of weight, [because they often] regain all of it, if not more. The bad news is the guidelines still treat obesity as a disease and call for potentially harmful interventions like drugs and bariatric surgery.... https://www.theguardian.com//obesity-chronic-illness-guide
