One evening my mother made dinner after a hard day's work. She put a plate of eggs, salad and burnt toast in front of my father ... I immediately noticed, the b...urnt toast .... And, I was waiting to see if he was going to complain about it, but my father started to eat them, smiling and asked me how I spent my day at school ... My mom apologized to my dad for the burnt toast. I will never forget his response to her: "Honey, I love burnt toast!" Later when I went to bed and my dad came over to kiss me goodnight, I asked him if he really liked the burnt toast? He hugged me and said, "Your mother has had a difficult day and she is really tired. She went out of her way to prepare this meal for us, why blame her and hurt her. Burnt toast never hurt anyone; but words can be very painful! " We have to know how to appreciate what others do for us, even if it's not perfect, because it's the intention to do well that counts, and no one is perfect ...

I am a full believer that you will reap what you sow. When you intentionally do people wrong you will eventually pay for it.I am a full believer that you will reap what you sow. When you intentionally do people wrong you will eventually pay for it.

I grew up in Philadelphia, PA. and while I know I was blessed to have grown up there...I was raised during a time when most everyone treated each other with respect. We didn't eat a lot of fast food because it was considered a treat, not a food group! We drank Kool-Aid & Hawaiian Punch made from water that came from our kitchen sink. We ate bologna sandwiches, or tuna fish (which was in a can not a pouch), PB&J, & grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup, hot dogs w/beans ,... but mostly homemade meals consisting of mainly meat, potatoes, vegetables, bread & butter, and homemade dessert, and Sunday sauce with meatballs and sausage, and on Wednesday, leftover sauce with spaghetti. Very few people seemed to have food allergies. We grew up during a time when we mowed lawns, raked leaves, pulled weeds, babysat, helped neighbors with chores to be able to earn our own money. We walked everywhere. We went outside a lot to play games, ride bikes, roller skate, run with siblings and friends, & played hide and seek, kickball, tag, & even dodge ball. We jumped over the sprinkler, slip and slide was a treat, washed our parents’ car, & drank tap water from the hose outside...bottled water was unheard of. We watched TV shows like American Bandstand, Gilligan's Island, Flipper, F-Troop, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Happy Days, Good Times, Laverne and Shirley , Little House on the Prairie, The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, My Sanford and Son, Sonny and Cher, Dennis the Menace, Big Valley and the Carol Burnett Show. After school, we came home and did our homework before going outside or having friends over. Sunday evenings were spent together watching Disney, Bonanza, Ed Sullivan and Lawrence Welk. We would ride our bikes for hours. We had to tell our parents where we were going, who we were going with, & what time we'd be back. You learned from your parents instead of disrespecting them and treating them as if they knew absolutely nothing. What they said was law. And you knew it. You had to be close enough to home to hear your Mom yelling to tell you it’s time to come home for dinner. When the street lights came on you had better be home. We ate around the dinner table and talked to each other as a family unit. In school, we said the Pledge of Allegiance, we stood for the National Anthem & listened to our teachers. We watched what we said around our elders. We held doors, carried groceries and gave up our seat for an older person without being asked. You didn't hear curse words on the radio in songs or TV, and wouldn’t think of cursing, especially around an adult. Please and Thank you were part of our daily vocabulary! Re-post if you're thankful for your childhood and will never forget where you came from & the time you came from! Wouldn't it be nice if it were possible to get back to this way of life? If this is how you grew up...Copy and paste... just change the town. See more
