BAEA 20-3518 Searsport lead poisoning We were contacted on Wednesday afternoon about a Bald Eagle that appeared to be injured in Searsport. Marc happened to b...e in Belfast on an errand but had no gear with him, so Diane arranged for volunteer transporters Jane and Gary Scott to meet him at the scene with needed equipment. They provided assistance in the capture process, and subsequently delivered the eagle to Avian Haven. The debilitated eagle was not difficult to catch, and Marc immediately recognized the wheezing/raspy breathing characteristic of advanced lead poisoning. That diagnosis was confirmed when the eagle arrived at Avian Haven: his blood lead level was off the scale of our screening instrument, and radiographs revealed a metal object in his GI tract. We administered a chelating agent, but we knew the eagle was too weak to survive removal of the object by lavage under general anesthesia. Additionally, the respiratory signs worsening over the course of yesterday were a clear sign that the eagle was already past the point of no return. The decision was made to end his suffering yesterday afternoon. www.huntingwithnonlead.org rescue photo by Jane Scott

All you need.......is BATS!!!
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na... #BATWEEK! Millions of bats live in national parks. In fact, more than 45 unique species of bats live in natio...nal parks! They pollinate, eat insects, use echolocation, and fascinate visitors. Some migrate, and some hibernate. Each species is unique, except that they're all facing threats of some type in their environments. Learn more about these wonders of the night at https://www.nps.gov/subjects/bats See more
Welcome to Bat Week! Of course, it's bat week here year-round!
Why do people think that they can just toss their masks & gloves onto the ground? Please use reusable cloth masks whenever possible; if you must use paper ones, please cut the straps before discarding responsibly into a trash can.
Please look out for deer & other animals crossing the roads!
Leaves provide shelter to any number of native species of animals.....including some bats!
Can you imagine: Every time you bike, hike or walk between now and November 6th, you could be raising funds for wildlife rehabs in Pennsylvania? Find out how!
Please don't litter your masks or gloves. And before you throw your masks in the garbage, please cut the straps. Save a wild animal!

This is a fun contest in the UK, but the article also has some wonderful info about how important bats are in growing a lot of the foods we eat! Thank a bat today!
Please help PA Wildlife Rehabilitators! Contrary to what many people think, we don't receive ANY government funding.....we survive solely on donations from the public!
Absolutely tragic. And preventable.
